The Faculty of Humanities, Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS), Centre for the Study of Religion (LUCSoR) is looking for a University Lecturer in the Study of Religion, with specialization in Contemporary Hinduism (1.00 FTE)
Key responsibilities
- Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, in lecture and seminar formats, and supervision of theses in BA Religious Studies, MA Religious Studies, BA International Studies, BA South and South-East Asian Studies, MA Asian Studies;
- Specific duties include the teaching of the Introduction to the Study of Religion and the Introduction to Hinduism, as well as seminars on ritual and on religion and media;
- Doing original research and regular dissemination of the results through appropriate channels;
- Representation of the field to external audiences and media;
- Active participation in the running of the Centre.
Selection criteria
- A PhD degree in the Study of Religion or a relevant field;
- Specialization in contemporary Hinduism;
- A publication record that is commensurate with career stage;
- Proven experience in teaching at university level, including formal teaching evaluations;
- An excellent command of English.

The Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. With its staff of 995, the faculty provides 27 master’s and 25 bachelor’s programmes for over 7,000 students based at locations in Leiden’s historic city centre and in modern buildings in The Hague.
Leiden Institute for Area Studies is comprised of a School of Asian Studies and a School of Middle-Eastern Studies, with international staff and student populations. The institute is committed to a present-day vision of area studies, integrating disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives on a solid foundation of excellent language skills. Current staff in LIAS has expertise in the fields of Anthropology, Archaeology, Art Studies, Buddhist Studies, Film Studies, History, International Relations, Language Pedagogy, Law, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Material Culture Studies, Performance Studies, Philology, Philosophy, Political Economy, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Visual Culture Studies.
The lecturer will hold a position in the Leiden University Centre for the Study of Religion (LUCSoR), whose mission statement reflects the notion of ‘religion in the world’, as a nutshell summary of the study of religion at Leiden University. Scholars in LUCSoR structurally work together with colleagues in the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS). Current staff in the study of religion have expertise in various fields in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Terms and conditions
We offer a fixed-term post from 1 August 2019 until 31 July 2021. Salary range from € 3637.- to € 4978.- gross per month (pay scale 11 , in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). Depending on qualifications, the lecturer may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until s/he fully meets the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience.
