PhD Student - Virus Genomics

Heinrich Pette Institute – Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI), Hamburg

PhD Student Control of Viral Latency

The Heinrich Pette Institute - Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI), is committed to research on the biology of different human viruses as well as the pathogenesis of viral diseases. The HPI offers the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research in a world-class research environment with excellent technical and animal facilities.

We are looking for a highly motivated student with eagerness to learn and make fundamental discoveries. Applicants should hold a diploma/master degree (or equivalent) and have experience in at least one of the disciplines and related techniques of molecular biology, chromatin research or virology. Prior experience in the field of DNA viruses would be welcome.

The position is to be filled for up to three years in the “Virus Genomics” group (head: Prof. Adam Grundhoff) with the possibility of extension. The starting date is as soon as possible. Payment and social benefits will be in accordance with the regulations of the German TV-AVH (salary agreement for public service employees).

Work in the research group of Adam Grundhoff focuses on tumorigenic DNA viruses and molecular mechanisms that allow viral persistence and contribute to virus-induced disease. The specific PhD project will elucidate fundamental mechanisms of viral latency establishment by DNA viruses, in particular Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). For this purpose, the prospective student will employ state-of-the art imaging and genome-wide analysis tools to investigate factors that control maintenance and transcriptional silencing of viral DNA in latently infected cells.

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Adam Grundhoff directly (Email: adam.grundhoff(at)leibniz-hpi.de).

Handicapped applicants with otherwise similar professional qualification and competence will be preferred.
