Chevening Gurukul Fellowship Programme for Leadership and Excellence

The Chevening Gurukul Fellowship Programme for Leadership and Excellence is the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s flagship fellowship for India and has run for 19 years. The fellowship is aimed at high-flyers and mid-career professionals from diverse backgrounds, with a strong and demonstrable leadership potential. It explores changing ideas and practices of leadership and exploring the implications of globalisation for Indian leaders.

About the fellowship programme

The Chevening Gurukul Fellowship Programme for Leadership and Excellence addresses the issues faced by leaders in all fields – ’how to lead more effectively’ – by analysing changing ideas and practices of leadership and exploring the implications of globalisation for Indian leaders. It aims to provoke critical thinking and provides unique opportunities for fellows to test their own hypotheses with policy makers and practitioners as well as with academics and opinion leaders.

The bespoke programme familiarises India’s future leaders with best practice case-studies of leadership in the fields of government, innovation, health, and industry in the UK through a variety of teaching methods ranging from seminars, role-playing scenarios, shadowing, and site visits. Some of the themes included in the twelve-week programme:

  • Managing change: Public policy and institutions in the 21st century
  • Stages of democracy: Devolving power and governance in the 21st century
  • From finance to Facebook: New economies of technology
  • International organisations and the work of the United Nations
  • The challenge of sustainability: Energy and resources
  • Regulating public life: New rights and judicial activism
  • Smart cities
  • Indo-UK business and trade relations
  • Science, technology and industry

It is a twelve-week residential course at King’s College London and includes numerous site visits, including a trip to Geneva where fellows will interact with representatives of international agencies such as the United Nations and World Trade Organization. The programme will commence in September 2016.
