About the grants
Applications for 2017 Japan Study Grants closed on 30 September 2016. Applications for 2018 will open in July 2017.
We offer annual Japan Study Grants to support scholars undertaking research on Japan and requiring special access to the Library’s Japanese or Japan related collections. These scholarships are made possible thanks to Harold S. Williams Trust Fund.
Preference for Japan Study Grants will be given to those with a demonstrated need to access the Library's Japanese language collections and who do not have ready access to Japanese language collections in their own region or institution.
The scholarships are tenable for a period of up to four weeks in the following calendar year. Scholars have privileged access to the Library’s materials and facilities, as well as sustained interaction with many of its staff.
Who can apply?
Japan Study Grants are open to researchers who are citizens of, or resident in, Australia. Applicants may be PhD candidates, early career or established researchers, or independent scholars, working in any discipline and who need to use the Library’s Japanese language or Japan-related collections for their research.
Researchers may be in the early or later stages of a project. They may need to explore the extent and depth of the Library’s collections to further develop their research or use specifically identified materials for a topic or thesis. A study grant may also enable a researcher to undertake preliminary investigations towards a larger or related project that may assist in attracting further research funding or work, including a future National Library of Australia Fellowship in Japan Studies, also supported by the Harold S. Williams Trust.
Priority will be given to those with a demonstrated need to access the NLA's Japanese language collections and who do not have ready access to Japanese language collections in their own region or institution. Note that the Library will accept repeat applications, but that a Japan Study Grant can only be awarded once. Former recipients, however, are eligible to apply for the three month Fellowship in Japan Studies.
In selecting scholars the National Library of Australia Japan Study Grants Advisory Committee will consider:
- the value and quality of the proposed research at the Library to the applicant's academic progress
- the relevance of the National Library's collections for the proposed research
Preference will be give to applicants:
- who are based in centres where there are few or no library resources in the Japanese language
- whose proposed study is best able to be supported by the National Library's Japanese and Japan-related collections
- whose proposed study, in the opinion of the advisory committee, would most clearly benefit from a period spent using the Library’s Japanese or Japan-related collections
What assistance is offered?
Study Grant recipients will receive financial support consisting of:
- An honorarium of $1000 per week to cover accommodation and living costs in Canberra, for up to four weeks
- A contribution to travel within Australia, equivalent to one return economy domestic airfare to and from Canberra
Note: Travel and accommodation expenses are paid only to those living outside the Canberra region, but independent scholars in the region (not full-time paid academics) may access the stipend on a pro-rata basis.
All recipients receive in-kind support consisting of:
- Special access to Asian collection stacks and staff expertise, including the support of Asian languages specialist librarians
- Access to office facilities in the Asian Collections area
- Copying of collection materials (within reasonable limits and according to access and copyright conditions)
Note: The Library’s Fellowships, Scholarships and Study Grants are awarded to an individual. Any funding to be paid by the Library normally will be paid directly to the individual for the purposes of supporting their research in the collections. Any other arrangements between the individual and their employer are the individual’s responsibility, and are to be negotiated separately between the individual and their employer.
What are the requirements?
Recipients will be required to:
- spend at least 75% of their time at the Library over four weeks
- provide a brief report on their research experience at the Library and the value of the collections and services
- acknowledge the support of the National Library in forums, presentations and publications resulting from the research
- assist the Library to promote the Japan Study Grants through media and public communications.
How to apply
- Register as an applicant
- You can only submit your application online. Instructions are provided during the application process.
- After you have submitted an application, you will receive a confirmation email. A reference number and a copy of your application will be attached to the email.
- If you are a PhD student, you are required to attach to your application a PDF copy of a certified transcript of your academic record and a PDF copy of a recently completed piece of research writing (eg a thesis chapter).
- You must nominate two referees, with their current contact details and also attach a PDF copy of referee reports to the application.
- Applications close on 30 September 2017.
