Internship - News Intern, The Economist, UK

Publish Date: May 06, 2016

Deadline: May 15, 2016

THE ECONOMIST is looking for an intern to work on our news desk. The position is based in London, and the pay is £2,000 a month. The job involves helping run The Economist's day-to-day news operation, setting the weekly news agenda and helping commission and edit explainers. We are looking for originality, wit, crisp writing and clarity of thought. Previous journalistic experience is not required. You must have the right to work in the UK.

The most important part of your application will be your sample article, which you should send, with a covering letter and CV, to newsintern@economist.com. Please write an explainer on any subject, as long as it is suitable for publication on the explainer blog, which can be found here.

The format is to explain things in four paragraphs and 500-600 words. The four paragraphs are

a) the set-up/question

b) the background

c) the actual explanation and

d) the consequences/implications.

You should try to mimic the punchy, witty, rigorous style of The Economist. The deadline is Sunday May 15th.
