University of Otago International Research Master's Scholarship

The University of Otago International Master's Award provides funding to support international Master's students studying at the University of Otago.

Applicants must be:

  • obtaining their first Master's qualification
  • international students
  • undertaking a thesis-based Master's

Selection is based predominantly on academic merit and the applicant’s potential for research.

Scholarships for Doctoral and Master's study at the University of Otago can be applied for at any time during the year.

Please note that due to continuous awarding processes and variability in the commencement of an applicant's academic programme, an advertised scholarship may not necessarily be available at time of application. Please contact the Scholarships Office to confirm the availability of a specific scholarship

Doctoral Scholarships

Applications for doctoral scholarships should usually occur when applying for admission. Applications for this scholarship are made online through the eVision portal. Once you have applied for admission to your programme you will receive an alert in your student portal inviting you to apply for a scholarship. It is also possible to apply for a scholarship after being admitted.

The main doctoral scholarship, open to both international and domestic applicants, is the University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship. In addition there are particular scholarships for Māori and Pacific Islandapplicants, as well as a number of specialised discipline-specific scholarships.

Research Master's Scholarships

Research Master’s scholarships support students during the thesis part of a research Master’s degree; pre-thesis papers are not covered by these scholarships.

See the table in this link if you are unsure of the type of Master's scholarship you can apply for.

Applications for research Master's scholarship should usually occur either:

  • when applying for admission (if the degree is by thesis only, or if the thesis will begin straight away), in which case you will receive an alert in your eVision portal after applying for admission to your programme inviting you to apply for a scholarship; or,
  •  just before the thesis component is about to begin (usually at the start of the second year for a master’s degree by papers and thesis), in which case you will receive a notification in your eVision portal after enrolling in your thesis paper.

It is also possible to apply for a research Master’s scholarship after beginning a Master's thesis.
