The Machine Learning Summer School
19 - 30 June 2017
at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, Tübingen, Germany
The Machine Learning Summer School will return to the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, from 19-30 June 2017.
The MLSS is a renowned venue for graduate students, researchers, and professionals. It offers an opportunity to learn about fundamental and advanced aspects of machine learning, data analysis and inference, from intellectual leaders of the field. We are very happy to announce a faculty of highly acclaimed speakers.
In the summer of 2017, the MLSS will already make its fifth appearance in the beautiful medieval university town of Tübingen, in southwestern Germany. It will be hosted by (and organized by members of) the Department for Empirical Inference at the newly established Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems.
Applications Now Open
The application system server is now open until 10 February 2017. Apart from some basic personal details, applicants will be asked to provide
- A short motivation statement
- A tentative title and abstract for their poster (see also below)

Past experience suggests that the MLSS will be over-subscribed. In this case, applicants will be selected competitively by internal review based on the documents listed above.

Some frequently asked questions
There have been repeated questions regarding the poster sessions. Posters are a long-standing tradition at the MLSS. Each applicant is asked to bring along a poster presentation covering some of their own work. This does not need to be published work (ongoing work, or work resulting from undergraduate projects is also fine, were applicable). While the day program covers broad areas of general interest, the poster sessions offer participants a chance to discuss their own work with their peers. The poster presentations will be a relaxed affair: Posters will be distributed across a room, with participants presenting to small groups of two or three standing in front of their posters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still sign up?
Yes, you can! The application system opens late December and closes January 31st 2017. Please have a look at applications.
Will the tutorials be recorded? Will they be available online? How about a live stream?
We will record all talks during the summer school and, subject to speakers' permission, release them online later in 2017, after the school has ended. At the moment we are not planning a live stream.
Is there a vegetarian option during the lunches / dinners?
All the catered lunches and dinners, including the conference banquet, will be buffets (so you can help yourself). There will always be vegetarian alternatives available. If you have other dietary requirements, please let us know.
Do you grant ECTS credit points?
Since there will be no examination we do not grant credit points. However, you will receive an attendance certificate at the end of the summer school, which might enable you to get credits from your home university. But this is something we won't be able to help with but solely up to your negotiation talent.
Can I change the title and content of my poster?
The corresponding field in the application asks for a tentative poster title. Feel free to change the content of your poster, even present something completely different from what you originally proposed. The point of the poster is to give you a chance to present your own work to the other participants. As long as you are confident about presenting it to your colleagues, it's fine with us.
What size should my poster be?
Our poster boards fit posters up to A0 size, in both landscape and portrait format.
Can I print posters in Tübingen?
In principle, yes. There are several printing services in town . However, their opening times do not always harmonize with the MLSS schedule, and we can make no statements about prices, quality or the staff's English language skills. If you can print your poster at home and bring it along in a poster tube, that's probably the best option.
