Funding and Scholarships

ISS receives a majority of students on a partial or full scholarship programme. While in the past many of our students have enjoyed their studies on a Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP) scholarship, there is an increasing group who apply for other scholarships. ISS has therefore created a scholarship database to help you find funding you are eligible for.

(Your admission is valid for two consecutive years. If you have applied for a Diploma course but your application for financial assistance has not been completed, your application will automatically be deferred to the next year. If you have applied for the MA programme, you will need to request a deferral through an email to the admission office.)

NFP & MSP

The Dutch government offers two scholarships to international students - the Netherlands Fellowship Programme and the MENA Scholarship Programme. Here you will fird more information and application instructions for these programmes.

ISS Scholarship database

You can find the ISS scholarship database below. Please keep in mind that scholarship application processes can take a long time, so be sure to send your ISS application in early.

ISS Funds

ISS established two funds to support students without any other form of scholarship. Both funds are open to Dutch and international students who wish to enroll in the Master of Arts in Development Studies at ISS. Students need to have a letter of admission from ISS.

ISS Scholarship Fund for Excellent Students

ISS offers scholarships for excellent students, each worth 40% of the tuition fee. The following candidates can apply:

  • People with relevant work experience, a degree in one of the social sciences (upper second or first class) and a strong motivation to study at ISS, or
  • Recent graduates with a first class degree in one of the social sciences and a strong motivation to study at ISS.

Applications to this fund are dealt with on an ongoing basis.

To apply please email your request to the ISS student office (studentoffice@iss.nl) as soon as possible (but before 15 June at the latest).

Requests should explain shortly the reason why a fee reduction will enlarge your opportunity to study at ISS  and include detailed financial information (including supporting bank statements) to prove your ability to support yourself for the remaining tuition fee, the living expenses and health insurance.

The decisions on allocation of the scholarship are taken on an ongoing basis. Students selected for the scholarship bursaries will be informed by the student office.

ISS Hardship Fund

Students who do not comply with the criteria for the scholarship fund for excellent students but do not have sufficient means to pay the entire tuition fee can apply to the ISS Hardship Fund.

This fund can provide a fee discount of up to 30% of the tuition fee .

Applications to this fund are dealt with on an ongoing basis.

Important information for EU citizen students

Students with European Union Citizenship should be aware that the subsidies that the Dutch Government (IB-Group) provides for a study at a regular Dutch university do not apply to the study programmes at ISS, although the ISS MA programme is fully accredited.

The ISS Scholarship Fund for Excellent Students and the ISS Hardship Fund are open for all students.
