International Affairs Fellowship in International Economics, Council on Foreign Relations, USA

Publish Date: Mar 07, 2022

The Kimberly Querrey-sponsored International Affairs Fellowship (IAF) in International Economics provides business economists and university-based economics academics with hands-on experience in the US government, allowing them to broaden their range of reasoning and work on international economic policy. The Federal Reserve Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the United States Department of Treasury, the United States Department of Commerce and relevant areas of the White House are all possible host locations for the fellowship appointment. The IAF in International Economics aspires to improve academics' teaching, scholarship, and research, enlighten business economists' practice, and introduce policymakers to cutting-edge academic research and scholarly debates.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be citizens of the US.

  • Applicants must be business economists in their mid-career or university-based economics specialists.

  • Applicants must indicate a strong desire to pursue a career in global economics or a related subject.

  • Candidates must have a master's degree in economics or a closely related field.

Fellowship Award

Candidates with no substantial prior job experience in the US government or at an international agency are given preference.

The fellowship lasts six to nine months and begins on a mutually agreed-upon date. The program provides a $190,000 stipend as well as a small moving fee allowance. Fellows are treated as independent contractors rather than CFR employees and are thus not entitled to benefits like health insurance.

CFR will work with each fellow to locate an appropriate placement for their fellowship year. All arrangements, however, are made at the host institution's choice. CFR cannot promise that you will be placed in a particular agency, office, or organization.

Fellows who want to spend their fellowship year working for a government agency in the United States will almost certainly need to receive a security clearance. The procedure of acquiring a security clearance can take a long time, and the US government is the only one who decides when one can be issued. Security clearances are often not required for positions with international organizations, academic institutions, think tanks, or Capitol Hill.

Selection Process

The following criteria are used to determine who is chosen as an IAF in International Economics:

  • scholarly qualifications

  • a solid basis in international economic problems

  • the impact that the fellowship will have on the applicant's career growth

  • professional experience

The procedure of selection is quite competitive. A selection committee reviews all applications to select the most potential individuals. The selection committee picks one candidate to be the fellow based on the complete application.
