Global Studies (GSP) Research-oriented International Master Program 2019 with Scholarships

Publish Date: Dec 07, 2018

Deadline: Jan 15, 2019

MA Program

The Global Studies Programme (GSP) is a research-oriented graduate programme that focuses on twenty-first century globalization and alternative futures. Within this framework, the programme emphasizes different regional and theoretical perspectives on globalization, especially from the global South, which aim at sustainability and equality in a postcolonial world. The main idea is to conduct research on “Twenty-first century globalization and alternative futures”. It is conducted jointly by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok), Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi), the University of Pretoria and FLACSO Argentina (Buenos Aires).

The Master programme comprises two years of studies on three continents. Students learn to approach the world and globalization from various regional perspectives by engaging in research within very different academic and cultural environments. The multicultural experience of the programme is enhanced by the multicultural composition of the group of students who are from all over the world. Students begin the programme in mid-April at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. They spend the following two or three semesters on different continents.

The Ph.D. programme offers joint supervision by two supervisors from two different world regions, who are engaged in research on the same topic. The student participates in this research concerning the main idea of the programme.

Semesters

The programme begins in the summer semester at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Students spend the second semester either at FLACSO Argentina or University of Pretoria. The third semester is spent either at Jawaharlal Nehru University or Chulalongkorn University.

The break between the third and fourth semester is used for internships, training or research.

The fourth semester is dedicated to thesis writing. In Berlin, a colloquium is offered with the participation of GSPians. Alternatively, partner universities might offer colloquiums for the same purposes.

Costs

Expenses will depend on individual lifestyles. Based on the experiences of the recent GSP groups, we can only give a general overview of costs. When we take all expenses into account, the students should expect to spend between 800-1000 Euros a month for the next two years to have a relatively comfortable student life. Some months the students will invest less than the others, and there will be times when they will be expected to spend more than 2000 Euros for booking flights, paying deposits, transferring tuition fees, etc. Therefore, we advise our students to make sure that they have 2000-3000 Euros saved for these times.

To get precise dates and numbers, the candidates should contact the local GSP staff for the relevant semester. The applicants should further assume that, despite their best efforts, they might spend more than they had anticipated and the total expenses at the end of the two years could amount to 20.000 - 25.000 Euros. Experience tells us that it is difficult for the GSP students to find student jobs when they move from one continent to another for the next semester. Therefore, we kindly urge potential applicants to assess the financial part of the programme carefully to avoid unnecessary stress during studies.
