A Junior Research Fellowship is tenable for four years with effect from 1st October 2018. There is no age limit, but a Fellowship is intended to support those at an early stage in their academic careers, who will expect, in due course, to go on to hold posts in educational institutions of international standing. The College will not normally appoint Junior Research Fellows who are more than three years beyond the award of a doctorate.

The stipend for a Junior Research Fellow (on the single pay spine scale point 13) is currently at £19,848. Stipends may be adjusted for Junior Research Fellows who have support from other sources. Non-stipendiary Fellowships may be awarded to those with full funding, especially in Natural Sciences. Junior Research Fellows may join the Universities Superannuation Scheme. There are also research funds available to Junior Research Fellows up to £1,500 per annum. For both stipendiary and non-stipendiary JRFs, single accommodation may be available in College. Junior Research Fellows living out of College will receive a non-pensionable allowance of £4,200 per annum; this is taxable and subject to National Insurance contributions. If non-resident, they are entitled to the use of a study, free of charge, in College. A dining allowance is also included.
