Harvard University Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies Ah WAng Postdoctoral Fellowship Program 2019-20, USA

Publish Date: Nov 28, 2018

Deadline: Jan 04, 2019

AN WANG POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS

An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowships have historically supported junior scholars in any discipline. Postdoctoral fellows are chosen from a competitive selection process. They spend one year at the Fairbank Center working on a book manuscript or articles. In addition, they deliver research presentations to the Fairbank Center community, mentor the Center’s graduate students, and, at times, teach courses in a department.

2019-2020 AN WANG POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies (FCCS) at Harvard University is pleased to announce the 2019-2020 competition for the An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowships in Chinese Studies.

This year, the Fairbank Center is collaborating with the Columbia-Harvard China and the World Program (C&WP) and the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University (WEAI) to award four one-year postdoctoral research fellowships. Two fellows will be expected to be in residence at Columbia University (one funded by WEAI and one funded by C&WP) and two will be at Harvard University (both funded by the An Wang Program). When not attending to program-related duties, fellows’ time should be devoted to their own research, and to participating actively in the life of C&WP and WEAI or FCCS. Fellows also will be expected to make at least one public presentation during their appointment and participate in the annual C&WP workshop where an entire day is devoted entirely to the examination of the Fellows’ research by former fellows of the program.

An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowship recipients will also be participants in a postdoctoral research group that will focus on China’s relationships with outside actors, including states, non-governmental organizations, and international institutions. This research group will be led by Professors Alastair Iain Johnston (Faculty of Arts and Sciences), Meg Rithmire (Harvard Business School), and Mark Wu (Harvard Law School).

Qualifications:

Applicants must have completed all Ph.D. requirements (dissertation completed and filed) between May 2016 and July 2019. Applications from individuals who hold or have held full-time teaching appointments will not be considered. Only applicants working on some aspect of China’s relations with the outside world that supports CWP’s, WEAI’s, and FCCS’s missions need apply. Preference will be given to applicants who are currently working on revising their Ph.D. thesis for publication as a book, or who are just beginning a second major research project. Holders of a Harvard University doctoral degree are not eligible for the An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowship, but may be selected to be in residence at Columbia.

Applicants must notify the Fairbank Center of any changes to the information provided in the application that may impact eligibility. Failure to communicate such changes may result in disqualification. If awarded the fellowship, the scholar must provide confirmation of successful completion of their Ph.D. degree, in the form of a diploma, certificate of completion from the degree-granting institution, or a letter from the institution’s Registrar, no later than August 1, 2019.

The fellowship period is from August 1, 2019 to July 31, 2020.

Total stipend for An Wang Postdoctoral Fellows: $60,000

Health insurance benefits for the An Wang fellowship recipients will also be provided. Fellows must reside in the Greater Boston area for the duration of the fellowship.
