Hamer Scholarships in China, Indonesia, Japan or Korea
The Victorian Government Hamer Scholarships Program is a language and cultural immersion program designed to build the Asia-engagement capabilities of Victorians and to help strengthen cultural awareness and partnerships between Victoria and Asia. The program provides scholarships for Victorians to undertake intensive language study at nominated universities or institutions in China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea.
Value
The Hamer Scholarships program provides $10,000 each for China or Indonesia, or $15,000 each for Japan or Korea.
Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship candidates must be:
- aged 21 or above during the time of submitting the application
- Australian citizens or permanent residents (residents of Victoria only)
- willing to study a language at nominated institution, for at least five months
- not in receipt of any other language study grant, funding or scholarship.
About the program
The Victorian Government Hamer Scholarships Program is a language and cultural immersion program designed to build the Asia-engagement capabilities of Victorians and to help strengthen cultural awareness and partnerships between Victoria and Asia. The program provides scholarships for Victorians to undertake intensive language study at nominated universities or institutions in China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea.
*Hamer Scholarships are only available for language study at nominated institutions and universities. Study duration must be at least five months. Applicants who do not meet this criteria will automatically be deemed ineligible.
Scholarship Amount
The Hamer Scholarships program provides $10,000 each for China or Indonesia, or $15,000 each for Japan or Korea, for one to two semester study duration (minimum 5-6 months) at one of the institutions in China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea, nominated by Governments of those countries. The scholarship is to be used for language study related expenses only, including:
- international air travel to and from the elected country
- accommodation and living expenses
- compulsory comprehensive travel insurance
- tuition and related fees
- text books and other study materials
- other study-related out-of-pocket expenses while in the elected country.
The scholarships are a contribution to the recipient’s financial requirements for at least five months overseas study. Any additional costs will be at the expense of the recipients.
The Scholarships are primarily aimed at people working in all public, private, not for profit and creative industries with linkages to China, Indonesia, Japan or Korea. Recent graduates, higher education students and researchers with specific study and/or research links to China, Indonesia, Japan or Korea, are also welcome to apply.
Application Rounds
There will be one Hamer Scholarship application round per year that will be open from March - April each year. This application round covers study commencing within 12 months of applying for the Hamer Scholarship (i.e. before March-April the following year).

Stage 1 - Submit application
Candidates will be required to do their own research to seek available and appropriate courses at one of the recommended institutions nominated for the Hamer Scholarship Program.
To be eligible, before submitting the application candidates must ensure that all fields are complete and the following documents are attached:
- a copy of the candidate's CV
- a copy of the candidate's passport for verification of age and citizenship or permanent residency (proof of permanent residency must be provided)
- a letter of endorsement is attached. Letters of endorsement must be a specific recommendation for the applicant’s suitability to undertake the Hamer Scholarships program. Letters of endorsement from the following will be accepted: current or previous employer/academic institution, industry associations, chambers of commerce, business partners or high level clients. Self-written letters or letters from family members will not be accepted. Applications without a letter of endorsement will not be accepted. A letter of endorsement should be similar to a reference letter, and the author should recommend the candidate as a suitable recipient for the Hamer Scholarship Program
- contact details of two referees.
Applications that do not meet the above requirements will not be considered.
All applications will be acknowledged by email and assessed against the selection criteria.

Stage 2 - Shortlisted applicants
Successful applications will be shortlisted and notified by email/phone and invited to participate in an interview with one of the Hamer Scholarship selection panels.
Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by email.
Stage 3 - Successful applicants
Successful applicants will be notified by email/phone and will be sent a formal Letter of Acceptance and the Terms and Agreements for undertaking the program.
