About the fellowship

EXETER COLLEGE

Salary: £37,029 - £39,653 p.a. (inclusive Housing Allowance of £8,577 p.a.) plus other benefits

Exeter College (part of the University of Oxford) proposes to appoint a Fixed-term Official Fellow and Lecturer in English Literature, 1550-1830. The position, which is strictly temporary, will be tenable for a period of three years, from 1 October 2017 until 30 September 2020.

The main duties of the post are to: undertake 288 hours of tutorial or class teaching across the 24 teaching weeks of the academic year (i.e. an average of 12 hours per week); set and mark college examinations; participate in the undergraduate admissions process; participate in the governance of the college; participate fully in the running of English and its joint schools within college; and engage in advanced study and research.

Teaching will primarily be given to undergraduates of the college, as well as to Williams College Visiting Students studying at Exeter College (who will have first call on 144 of the 288 hours of the fellow’s stint across the year).

The college has a preference for applications from those able to teach the whole of the range 1550-1830, but particularly important is the ability to teach the following Final Honour School papers: FHS Paper 1 (Shakespeare) and FHS Paper 3 (1550-1660).

In addition to these papers, an ability to teach some or all of FHS Paper 4 (1660-1760), FHS Paper 5 (1760-1830) and/or the Special Authors paper and Special Options paper falling within the period 1550-1830 would be considered an advantage, as would the ability to supervise any dissertations falling within this period.

The successful candidate will have:

(a)              The proven ability, or the potential, to provide excellent tutorial and small group teaching in a range of undergraduate topics;
(b)              The ability to undertake pastoral responsibilities;
(c)              The ability to undertake college administration and duties, and to co-operate in the running of English Language & Literature in the college, and in college affairs more generally;
(d)              By 1 October 2017, candidates must have obtained a PhD (e.g. successful viva voce examination), or have achieved an equivalent research profile, in a relevant field within English Literature;
(e)              An excellent research record, appropriate to the stage of the candidate’s career, with evidence of (or evidence of potential for producing) distinguished scholarship and research in English; and
(f)               Excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation, and organisational skills, including personal initiative.

The successful candidate will become a member of the Governing Body, and therefore a Trustee, at Exeter College.

The fellow will be appointed at points 1-4 (commensurate with experience) on the Senior Tutors’ Committee’s Register of Approved Payments for Fixed-term Fellows (currently £28,452 - £31,076 p.a.). In addition, a Housing Allowance of £8,577 p.a. will be payable, making a total salary package of £37,029 - £39,653 p.a.

In addition to salary, a range of other generous benefits are available, as set out in the Further Particulars.
