The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (IWM) is a community of researchers dedicated to advanced research in the social sciences and humanities.

The Institute has encouraged intellectual interchange between disciplines, academics and society, and between areas of the world for more than four decades. It welcomes over a hundred fellows, arranges public interactions, and produces books, essays, and digital forums every year; Encounter and Solidarity, Encounters in Democracy, and Encounters with Europe are the three leading themes. The permanent fellows work together to develop research initiatives and programs that allow to host roughly a hundred prominent guests and senior and junior visiting fellows in Vienna each year.

CEU Visiting Fellowship

Objective

The collaborative fellowship program of Central European University and the Institute for Human Sciences (Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, IWM) in Vienna encourages recent CEU Ph.D. graduates to pursue research Visiting Fellows at the IWM.

Whatever topic in the social sciences and humanities that connects to research conducted at the IWM is eligible to apply. Applicants should examine the Institute's website (http://www.iwm.at) to see if their research topic meets its profile.

Conditions

Between October and June, the CEU Visiting Fellows spend five months at the IWM in Vienna, working on their research work as members of the Institute's global scholarly community. The IWM offers the Fellows a personal office and IT, administrative, and research infrastructure. During their tenure at the IWM, CEU Visiting Fellows are paid a stipend of EUR 3,000 per month to cover travel, lodging, health insurance, research expenses, and other miscellaneous expenses.

Eligibility

Candidates for the Fellowship must have earned a Ph.D. from CEU in any discipline or have submitted their Ph.D. dissertation. Candidates must have acquired a Ph.D. degree from CEU within the previous three years of applying.

Digital Humanism Fellowship

The recently established fellowship program 'Digital Humanism" attempts to define, analyze, and influence the intricate connection between technology and humanity, to create a better society and way of life in the digital age. The Institute runs the program in cooperation with Hannes Werthner. Visiting Fellows, both senior and junior, are invited to the Institute to investigate the urgent intellectual issues posed by the intricate interaction of humans and machines. During their time at the Institute, participants focus on pressing issues, conduct interdisciplinary research, and arrange public lectures and conversations in Vienna and beyond.

Eligibility

When applying, applicants must be pursuing a doctoral degree or have received a Ph.D. within the previous four years.

Emma Goldman Fellowship

The Emma Goldman Visiting Fellowships are a collaboration between the IWM and the FLAX Foundation and are named after renowned anarchist, writer, and lecturer Emma Goldman (1869–1940). The FLAX Foundation will provide grants to brilliant and motivated European feminist and inequality researchers each academic year to assist their r&d efforts. The Emma Goldman Visiting Fellowships, hosted by the IWM, will be presented to two researchers among the Emma Goldman recipients.

Engagement with feminist and inequality-related work, a track record of significant contributions to information on feminist and inequalities in Europe, track history of cooperation and solidarity, public spirit and inventiveness, insight into their chosen subject, and the potential to contribute to knowledge in the future The IWM hosts the annual Emma Goldman Award Ceremony. Awarded researchers will meet the criterion of having exceptional competence. Individuals living in Europe will get honors (independent of citizenship or immigration status).

Conditions

As IWM's international intellectual community members, the Fellows will work in residence at the IWM for one month, pursuing their research ideas. The IWM will provide the Fellows with complimentary office space, IT, administrative, research infrastructure, and other services. Every year, between September 1 and June 30, the Fellowship can be applied for.

The program pays a total stipend of EUR 50,000 to each Fellow. The cost of travel and lodging in Vienna is covered up to EUR 2,500 per individual.

Hebrew University Fellowship

Every second academic year, the European Forum at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna grant an IWM Visiting Fellowship through this collaborative fellowship program, which began in 2014.

The Institute for Human Sciences and the European Forum at Hebrew University (www.ef.huji.ac.il) jointly award one six-month Visiting Fellowship to a Ph.D. candidate or faculty member at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Conditions

The Visiting Fellow will be requested to spend six months at the IWM in Vienna between September and June to undertake a research study while working in residence as a member of the Institute's worldwide, multidisciplinary intellectual community. Senior fellows will be paid €22,000, while junior fellows will be paid €11,000 to cover housing, living expenses, transport, health insurance, and other miscellaneous expenses during their time at the Institute. The IWM will also provide an office, Internet access, in-house research facilities, and other relevant research tools in Vienna. The IWM will also serve lunch five days a week. 

Eligibility

Ph.D. candidates or faculty members in any subject within the social sciences and humanities whose research areas match the IWM's core research fields are eligible to apply for a fellowship www.iwm.at. If the selected Fellow is not a faculty member or a student in one of the Europe Forum's teaching programs, their department should co-fund 25% of the stipend (€5,500, resp. € 2,750).

Jan Patočka Fellowship

The Jan Patoka Fellowship Program intends to encourage research inspired by Jan Patoka's Fellowship work and legacy and is dedicated to his intellectual pursuits. It gives Czech researchers the freedom to work on any project they like. Junior and Senior Visiting Fellows are both welcomed into the program. The Jan Patoka Senior Visiting Fellowships are exclusively available through invitation.

The Humanities and Social Sciences receive all academic fields as eligible for the Fellowship. Proposals for study in one of the Institute's key research areas are particularly encouraged.

Eligibility

  • The candidates must be Czech citizens.

  • The candidates must currently be pursuing a doctoral degree or have recently obtained a Ph.D. in any humanities or social sciences discipline.

  • The candidates must be 35 years or less.

Józef Tischner Fellowship

Objective

The Józef Tischner Fellowships are available to all academic fields in the liberal arts, with a heavy emphasis on a thematic connection to one of the Institute's study areas.

Conditions

Senior Visiting Fellows will be paid EUR 4,000 per month. In contrast, Junior Visiting Fellows will be paid EUR 2,000 per month to cover housing, living expenses, travel, health insurance, and other miscellaneous expenses during their time in Vienna. In addition, the IWM provides them with free office space, internet access, in-house research and administrative facilities, and other services. Travel grants of up to EUR 1,500 are available for project-related research travels.

Eligibility

Applicants for the Józef Tischner Junior Visiting Fellowship:

  • must be Polish citizens, Polish-American scholars, or permanently reside in Poland

  • must be pursuing their doctoral degree or have recently obtained a Ph.D. at the time of applying

  • must be 35 years old or younger

Milena Jesenská Fellowship for Journalists

The Milena Jesenská Fellowship Program provides time off from professional tasks to European reporters (including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey).

Fellowships are meant to recognize and reward distinction in cultural journalists, with their culture being construed broadly to include a wide range of intellectual and creative professions. However, candidates' work may also address societal challenges of European importance and the IWM's objective.

Applicants need to have experience in print, broadcast, or online journalism and a solid professional record. Entry-level journalists and students will have their applications denied.

Conditions

Four Fellows will be asked to spend three months each at the IWM in Vienna, Austria, during the next Fellowship period. They will receive a monthly stipend of EUR 2,500. In addition, the IWM offers them a free office that includes internet access, administrative and research facilities, and other services. For project-related research travels, travel grants of up to EUR 1,900 are available.

OEAW Fellowship

Each year, several Visiting Fellowships are provided at the IWM in Vienna to collaborate between the Austrian Academy of Sciences (AW) and the Institute for Human Sciences.

A stipend from one of the AW funding programs for doctorate students (DOC, DOC-team) or researchers in the early stages of their careers (APART) is required.

The IWM Collegium is in charge of making the ultimate selection of candidates for the Visiting Fellowship.

Paul Celan Fellowship for Translators

The Paul Celan Fellowship Program aims to address inadequacies and inequities in the flow of ideas and the reception of scholarly literature that resulted from Europe's divide in the twentieth century. As a result, the program supports translations from Eastern to Western, Western to Eastern, or between two Eastern European tongues of canonical texts and significant contemporary works in the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies. Translations of substantial works by East European authors and/or female scholars usually receive special attention. A conceptual connection to one of the IWM's research disciplines is also welcomed.

*Please note that poetry and fiction will not be considered.

Conditions

Paul Celan Visiting Fellows will work on their translation projects at the IWM for three months. Fellows are paid a monthly stipend of EUR 2,800 to cover all costs associated with their stay in Vienna. Furthermore, the IWM provides the fellows with a free office that includes an internet connection, in-house research and administrative facilities, and other services.

Application

Applications must be filed online and include the following information:

  • a curriculum vitae that includes a bibliography of translations and other relevant works

  • the author's name and the work to be translated (from the original language), as well as an explanation for the choice of translation method the precise amount of pages

  • the exact quantity of pages

  • a publisher's contract or letter of intent

  • proof that the translation and its publication are owned by the translator/publisher (or has an option for them)

  • the anticipated publication date

SEE Graduate Scholarships

The SEE Graduate Scholarships for scholars from South-Eastern Europe is designed to help outstanding, talented students in need pursue a doctoral degree in Vienna. It provides stipends and access to the Institute for Human Sciences' scholarly community (IWM). All academic fields in the arts and social sciences are eligible for scholarships.

Applicants for Scholarships:

  • Citizens of one of the following countries are eligible to apply: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey are all part of the European Union (must not be EU citizens)

  • The candidates' primary residence is in Vienna.

  • Candidates need to be pursuing a master's or doctoral program in the humanities or social sciences at a Vienna-based university throughout the duration of the Fellowship (and show proof of enrolment).

  • Candidates have completed their bachelor's or master's degrees.

Conditions

Selected applicants will get a stipend to help them continue their studies. Master's students are paid € 1,000 per month, while doctorate students are paid € 1,200.

The selected applicants must not receive direct or indirect income from other scholarship programs, rent, or capital investment for the scholarship duration.

The grantees are not expected to live at the IWM. They are invited to join the scholarly community at the Institute by participating in seminars and academic events at the IWM.

Ukraine in European Dialogue Junior Fellowship

This Junior Visiting Fellowships program intends to assist the research of Ukrainian scholars within the last stages of their Ph.D. studies or who have recently completed them. It grants younger researchers with extraordinary skill access to the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) facilities in Vienna, allowing them to work on a research project of their choice. Proposals for studies that are connected to the IWM's purpose and research are actively encouraged. All academic specialties in the arts and social sciences are eligible for the grants.

Eligibility

Candidates for the Junior Visiting Fellowship need to be Ukrainian citizens who are enrolled in or have recently finished a Ph.D. degree in the humanities or social sciences and are under 35 years of age.

Note that preference will be given to candidates currently living in Ukraine.
