Job description

The Department of Languages, Literature and Communication at Utrecht University is looking to recruit an Assistant Professor (0.8 FTE) of Comparative Literature as of 1 August 2017. The successful candidate will be appointed to the Comparative Literature Section (Afdeling Literatuurwetenschap) of the Department.

The Comparative Literature programme in Utrecht has a distinguished record in the field of literary theory and comparative literary history. We use literature as a lens through which to study broader cultural developments from a theoretical, historical, transnational, and comparative media perspective. Key concerns are: transculturality; cultural memory; comparative media; book history, including the digital age; digital humanities; contemporary developments.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the interdisciplinary research group Comparative Literature. The successful candidate is expected to be able to teach  at all levels in the various degree programmes taught by the Comparative Literature section: the BA in Comparative Literature and Culture, the MA Literature Today, and the Research MA Comparative Literary Studies. The successful candidate should also be able to contribute to department-wide courses in literary theory and history, as well as to the literature programme at University College Utrecht.

Qualifications

The successful candidate:

  • has a doctorate in the field of Comparative Literature;
  • can show evidence of being a promising researcher;
  • has relevant teaching experience;
  • has an up-to-date knowledge of theoretical discussions in the field of literary and cultural studies as well as a firm grasp of the history of these discussions;
  • can contribute significantly to the research group Comparative Literature, Research Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON);
  • has expertise that relates to the literature and culture of more than one language area in the period since 1900;
  • has an international orientation and is able to teach both in English and, within a period of 2 years, in Dutch; 
  • has good organisational and communicational skills.

Offer

The appointment will be for 0.8 FTE as of 1 August 2017. The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of two years. Subject to excellent performance, this will be followed by a permanent position. Salary depends on qualifications and experience and will range from €3,427 to €5,330 (scale 11/12 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full-time employment.

Utrecht University offers a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and flexible terms of employment.
