BACHELOR PROGRAMME (BA) FASHION DESIGN
To succeed in the fashion industry, creativity and artistic talent as well as technical, methodical and economical knowledge is essential.
ESMOD Berlin launched its Bachelor Programme “Fashion Design – Styliste/Modéliste” in September 2011 to prepare students for a career in fashion. The professions of Styliste (Design Concept) and Modéliste (Design Realisation) are closely linked to one another and hence are taught in combination with a comprehensive focus and in module collaborations. Furthermore, at ESMOD Berlin the programme is open for international students as it is also offered in English.
AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME
The practice relevant Programme with an international focus qualifies graduates for a comprehensive career in the global fashion industry. The programme imparts basic and advanced skills in the areas of conceptual design, pattern cutting and realisation as well industry relevant knowledge. The competences conveyed are professional, interdisciplinary and generic and the communication of applied knowledge, methods and techniques will enable students to critically approach, and comprehensively resolve, complex and demanding design tasks.
The study programme is divided into the successive qualification stages whose content builds upon each other: basic and intermediate stage.
The modules of the basic stage in the first three semesters will impart basic knowledge in conceptual design, pattern cutting and realisation, history of fashion and cultural studies as well as the fine arts, textile technology and aesthetic praxis in an integrative context. The aim of the basic-stage modules is the acquisition of elementary subject-specific and interdisciplinary skills and their application. Furthermore, this stage prepares students for the project- oriented studies in the following stage.
In the modules of the intermediate stage during the fourth to seventh semester students will deepen and specialise their existing foundational knowledge, and will apply their skills in creative and experimental contexts. The students’ overall reflection, contextualisation, design and implementation of collection development is of particular importance. Further to expanding the acquisition of professional competences the intermediate stage modules are focussed on the acquisition of interdisciplinary and generic competences. This stage incorporates the praxis semester during which students apply, review and deepen the knowledge and practical abilities acquired in the course of their studies under the conditions of working for a business in the fashion industry. The final Bachelor exam takes place in the seventh semester and consists of the design project, the theoretical-scientific thesis and the colloquium.
The Bachelor Programme “Fashion Design - Styliste/Modéliste” lays the theoretically reflective and creatively practical groundwork for entry-level work in a business or independent work in the international fashion industry. The programme’s content and form are geared towards the constantly- changing demands of the market and, through innovation and practical orientation, the programme anticipates trends and currents. The programme imparts basic and advanced knowledge in the areas of conceptual design and realisation, aesthetic praxis, theory of fashion history and cultural studies as well as the economics of fashion. The competences conveyed are professional, interdisciplinary and generic and the communication of applied knowledge, methods and techniques will enable students to critically approach, and comprehensively resolve, complex and demanding design tasks.
The four subject areas of the programme are as follows:
1. Design Concept/Stylisme: Students will learn the conceptual and illustrative areas of fashion design like formulation of a collection theme, trend analysis, product research and collection design as well as presentation techniques and different approaches to style and design. Students gain insight into the conception and design of artistic and experimental collections through research and analysis of various elements of collection development (e.g. market-, material- and product research). Additional specialisations may be selected in the areas of material/surface design; clothed figure-/life drawing or digital graphics.
2.Design Realisation/Modelisme: In the artistic area of pattern cutting, students will learn the fundamental and advanced skills of pattern cutting and realisation. Classical and experimental approaches such as draping on the dummy, process-specific production technology, pattern construction and detail finishing will be introduced, initially in relation to individual garments before subsequently being applied in the context of a full collection. The spectrum may include all relevant pieces of clothing for a collection: skirt, dress, trousers, overalls, blazer and coat. This subject area is closely intertwined with the subject area Design Concept/Stylisme.
Starting in the second year both of the subjects above can be combined in interdisciplinary projects and, as a result, the exams of both subjects can be merged into one.
3. Aesthetic Praxis/Esthétique dans les faits: This subject lays the foundation for the artistic education and reflection and, over the course of the studies, elaborates and deepens the subject. Apart from conveying a foundation of the fine arts, various methods of visual expression, sculptural design and aesthetic techniques will be learned and applied.
4. Theory/Théorie: This subject area provides specific expert knowledge in the fields of textile technology, history and cultural studies related to fashion and design, as well as the economics of fashion. Sociocultural aspects will be examined in their historical, contemporary and anthropological context. The analysis of fashion’s historical development, current approaches to fashion design and the acquisition of a sustainable, future-oriented design vocabulary are addressed with equal emphasis. These aspects are supplemented through an introduction to marketing, design law, setting up business and corporate culture in order to provide a highly market-oriented practical relevance.
