Engineering Professional Internship Program

The Engineering Professional Internship Program is a full-time internship opportunity that includes a minimum of eight months of professionally supervised work experience in the industry. By participating in an internship, students are able to apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired during their undergraduate studies in a practical and challenging work environment.

Given that the Professional Internship Program is classified as a series of four-month academic courses within the University of Saskatchewan, interns earn a competitive salary, may receive benefit packages, and earn vacation pay, all while maintaining their full-time student status.

Aside from gaining practical and in-depth experience within a specialized field, interns typically develop strong interpersonal skills, the ability to write reports, present seminars, supervise others - all attributes that allow College of Engineering graduates to better market themselves in an increasingly competitive job market.

Normally, an internship placement commences after the student has completed 84 credit units towards any major in the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.E.) program. Participating in the Engineering Professional Internship Program extends a student’s degree completion time by a minimum of one year.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to participate in the Professional Internship Program, undergraduate students registered in the College of Engineering must have:

  • Completed at least 84 credit units towards a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.E.) degree program;
  • Attained a 65% average in the most recent academic session;
  • Return to their academic studies with at least 18 credit units of coursework remaining; and
  • Remain in good academic standing prior to leaving on internship.

Please note that registration in CE 495.3, CHE 495.3, CME 495.3, EE 495.3, ENVE 495.3, EP 495.3, GEOE 495.3, or ME 495.3 disqualifies a student’s eligibility for a January start date in the Engineering Professional Internship Program.

Application Process

Prospective students interested in participating in the Professional Internship Program must submit a program application via CareerLink - https://careerlink.usask.ca/home.htm during the required timelines each year. Students are encouraged to submit an application if they currently meet the eligibility criteria or will likely meet the criteria in the upcoming academic year.

Once an application has been submitted, the College of Engineering will initially review applications between July and September each year. Once reviewed, applicants will receive an email notifying them of the status of their application.

If an application is approved, applicants will be informed that they must complete their registration in the program (they must register for and attend a consultation session as well as pay the required program fee). If an application is declined, the candidate will be notified via email. The College of Engineering will reassess all declined applications at the beginning of the subsequent term.

To be considered for January 2017, May 2017, or September 2017 placement, prospective students must submit a program application between March 2, 2016, and September 9, 2016.

It is recommended that the program be completed during a student’s third year of study. Prospective students interested in completing the program in their final year of study are strongly encouraged to consult an Academic Advisor in the College of Engineering.

Program Requirements

All internship placements are either 8, 12, or 16 months in duration. Registered interns who secure a work placement in the Professional Internship Program will be registered in between two and four EPIP-series courses, each one being four months in duration. Students must complete a minimum of two of the following courses, in addition to the regular requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.E.) program:
  • EPIP 401.0 - http://www.usask.ca/programs/course.php?csubj_code=EPIP&cnum=401
  • EPIP 402.0 - http://www.usask.ca/programs/course.php?csubj_code=EPIP&cnum=402
  • EPIP 403.0 - http://www.usask.ca/programs/course.php?csubj_code=EPIP&cnum=403
  • EPIP 404.0 - http://www.usask.ca/programs/course.php?csubj_code=EPIP&cnum=404

Registered interns are required to submit a written report on experience for evaluation every four months. Reports will be reviewed by a Faculty Supervisor within the College of Engineering and a grade of “pass” or “fail” assigned accordingly. The grade received on the written report will appear on a student’s academic transcript at the University of Saskatchewan. A student who fails one EPIP-series course will receive a failing grade in each of the courses and is deemed to have failed the internship program.
