DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT (CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY)

A doctoral fellowship of the Excellence Cluster 264 Topoi for the 2016/17 winter semester (starting October 1, 2016) is now open to applicants. Receiving the fellowship is connected with admission to the Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies (BerGSAS) of the Berliner Antike-Kolleg and participation in the scholarship program “Landscape Archaeology and Architecture”, which is based on a structured curriculum.

The project advisor will be Prof. Dr. Monika Trümper (Freie Universität, Institute of Classical Archaeology).

Applicants should have an excellent university degree in Classical Archaeology. The dissertation must be submitted at the Freie Universität and can be written in German, English, French, or Italian language. A high command of a second modern language is essential.

The fellowship will include a stipend of 1350 euros per month to be awarded for two years, with an option to extend for a third year upon positive evaluation. A child allowance will be made available in accordance with DFG guidelines.

The research group C-6 examines Cityscaping, the development, modelling, and transformation of urban space and settlements. Applicants should carry out their own research project on the development and change of cities after significant known events (e.g., political, military, economic, social crises, natural catastrophes). Research area is the entire Mediterranean, preferably within the period of 700 BC to AD 400. The study can be comparative or can focus on a significant case study; it can examine cities as a whole (with their entire material culture) or individual institutions/buildings.

Applications quoting reference number 2016-C-MT and including the documents listed below should be emailed to application@berliner-antike-kolleg.org by May 10, 2016. For further information, please contact monika.truemper@fu-berlin.de, www.topoi.org and www.berliner-antike-kolleg.org.
