CALL FOR PAPERS

The A.M. Gorky Folklore Department of the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences is conducting an International Conference on “Folklore and Great Russian Revolution of 1917.” The conference will take place on October, 12-13, 2017 at the Institute of World Literature.

The following themes are offered for discussion:

• Folklore of February and October Revolutions (1917), new and rare information sources; 
• People and events of the Great Russian Revolution as reflected in oral history and folklore (chastushki, anecdotes, agitation songs, rumours)
• The Great Russian Revolution in visual folklore images (posters, caricatures, fliers, etc.);
• Folklore as a means of agitation and propaganda in the period of revolutions and the civil war (journals, fly-sheets, slogans, agitation theater, etc.);
• The influence of the Russian Revolution on the folklore process (the transformation of traditional genres, the appearance of new folklore genres, and the formation of new rituals, holidays and mass activities);
• The Russian Revolution’s influence on the lives of folklore researchers and folklore collectors;  
• the language of the Revolutionary era, renewal of speech practices and folklore (the new Bolshevik language, abbreviations, proverbs and aphorisms);
• Plots, heroes, images, and ideas of the February and October revolutions in Soviet and post-Soviet folklore. 

The working language is Russian. Conference papers are planned to be published.

No registration fee is needed. Funds for transportation to Russia and accommodation in Moscow will not be provided. 

The organizing committee consists of Vladimir Klaus (president), Yelena Minyonok (coordinator), Svetlana Sorokina, Vera Terekhina, Andrei Toporkov.
