Associate Professor Position in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Oslo invites applications for an Associate Professorship in Mathematics, Partial differential equations.

Information about the research group:

The Department of Mathematics consists of six sections, representing different research groups. Differential Equations and Computational Mathematics  is one these sections, and includes research areas like numerical analysis, computational geometry, and optimization in addition to partial differential equations. Currently the Section has nine permanent scientific members, and four of them have partial differential equations as their main research activity. The Department  is seeking an additional  Associate Professor to strengthen the activity in partial differential equations.

The focus of the research activity in partial differential equations includes both mathematical analysis and the development of numerical methods for these equations. Keywords describing the activity are: mathematical and numerical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations, stochastic partial differential equations, nonlinear systems of conservation laws, nonlinear wave equations, finite element methods, and compatible discretizations.

The ideal candidate for the position will be able to contribute to the above topics of research, and to broaden the scientific profile.

General information about the position:

Applicants must document scientific qualifications in his/her field, equivalent to an Associate Professor position. The successful applicant must be able to teach at all levels and to supervise Master and PhD students. 50% of the working time will be devoted to teaching, teaching related activities and administrative duties. The successful applicant may furthermore be required to take on other teaching duties and administrative tasks, by request from the Department or the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Teaching is given in Norwegian and English. Foreign language speakers will be expected to be able to teach in Norwegian within three years after being hired.

Specific information about the position:

The successful applicant will have a strong research profile demonstrating her/his ability to work independently. Candidates with a fairly recent PhD degree are preferred. She/he must contribute with research in her/his area of specialization. She/he should be open for interdisciplinary scientific cooperation. The appointee will be expected to maintain and further develop our considerable network of national and international academic connections.

Associate Professors must have a basic formal pedagogical competence, and applicants that cannot yet document such competence, are required to acquire this within two years of their start in the position. The university offers a course for this purpose. For details contact the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Evaluation:

In the evaluation of the applicants, the following will be emphasized:

  • Scientific and pedagogical qualifications
  •
Competence that fits the activity of the research group in  Partial Differential Equations
  • Experience with external fund raising and outreach activities

  • Administrative and other qualifying activities

Evaluation:

As a general rule interviews and trial lectures will be used as part of the appointment process. Reference is otherwise made to rules regarding the procedures for appointment of persons to positions as professors and associate professors at the University of Oslo  and Rules for the assessment and weighting of pedagogical competence for appointments to permanent academic posts, which include teaching duties.

In the evaluation of scientific qualifications, originality and innovation will be given priority before volume, and recent publications will be weighted higher than older. Especially, scientific production in the last 5-8 years will be given most weight.

As a general rule an interview will be used in the appointment process, and it may be appropriate to require trial lectures. The basis for assessment will be the scholarly production of the applicant, other qualifications, pedagogical or educational, the applicant's qualifications within leadership and administration as well as the general personal suitability. In ranking the competent applicants, the full range of qualifications will be considered and explicitly assessed. Cf. the Rules for appointments to associate professorships. For more information see here.
