Arabic Poetry Translation Contest

As part of Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here DC 2016, Split This Rock invites submissions of English translations of Arabic poetry. $500 will be awarded for the best English translation of an Arabic poem on the themes of social justice or freedom of expression. Winning poems will be published on Split This Rock's website and within The Quarry: A Social Justice Poetry Database https://www.splitthisrock.org/poetry-database. The contest will be judged by Fady Joudah, whose poetry and poetry translations (from the Arabic) have received the Yale Series of Younger Poets, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Griffin International poetry prize, a PEN USA award among others. Alight and Textu are his most recent collections. Textu is a sequence of short poems composed on cell phone where meter is character count. Guidelines for submission can be found here https://splitthisrock.submittable.com/submit.

DEADLINE: May 1, 2016
PRIZES: First place $500; 2nd and 3rd place, $250 each. Winning poems will be published on Split This Rock's website and within The Quarry: A Social Justice Poetry Database https://www.splitthisrock.org/poetry-database.

READING FEE: None.

Submission Guidelines: Submit one unpublished translation of a poem in any style. The poem must have not been previously published in English translation. The poem must be no more than 4 pages in total, and the original Arabic poem must follow the translation in the same PDF. By submitting your translation you certify that you have permission from the poem’s copyright holder to publish the poem and its translation. Visit Split This Rock's Submittable page https://splitthisrock.submittable.com/submit for instructions on submitting your translation.

What we mean by “unpublished”: We accept only poems that have not yet been included in a publication with an ISBN number or online via a juried journal or website. If your poem is selected and it is posted on social media, we ask that you take it down prior to our publishing contest results.

We read blind. Please do not put your name or contact information on the document you upload to Submittable or within its title or your poems will be in jeopardy of being disqualified.

Simultaneous submissions are OK, but please notify us immediately if the poem is accepted elsewhere.

Close friends, relatives, students, and former students of the judge are excluded from the contest. Likewise, the current Board of Directors, staff, teaching artists, and DC Youth Slam Team of Split This Rock are excluded, as are members of their immediate families. (For more detail: visit the code of ethics https://www.splitthisrock.org/programs/contests-awards/council-of-literary-magazines-and-presses-contest-code-of-ethics on our website.)
