A Postdoctoral Research Position in Political Science, Lund University, Sweden

Publish Date: Oct 12, 2016

Deadline: Oct 14, 2016

Job Description

The postdoctoral position is part of the research project “Explaining radicalization and political violence”, a four-year interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers from the Department of Political Science at Lund University and the Departments of Psychology at Lund and Gothenburg University. The project is funded by The Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg foundation with Professor Hanna Bäck as project leader. The project aims to study the psychological mechanisms that lead an individual to become radicalized and/or to use political violence, and investigates such mechanisms by the cross-fertilization of political science and psychology. One of the project hypotheses focuses on the causal relationship between social exclusion or rejection and the likelihood of radicalization. The project applies a multitude of methodological approaches, and is for example based on experimental and survey studies, in addition to analyses of online material/social media.

For further information on the research project, please contact Hanna Bäck (contact info below).

The post-doctoral fellow will be expected to carry out research that contributes to the fulfilment of the project’s overall research objectives. However, the fellow will also conduct independent research and will be free to develop his or her own theoretical ideas, and choose the methods that he or she finds most appropriate. The position is full-time fixed-term (2 years). The holder of this post will be expected to conduct research (about 80 %) and to teach (about 20 %). In order to allow the research group to function as a team, the post-doctoral fellow will be expected to have the Department of Political Science in Lund as their main place of work.

Qualifications

Eligibility for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is restricted to applicants with a PhD degree in a relevant subject. Priority is given to applicants who have completed their PhD less than three years prior to the deadline for applying to the post. The three-year limit can be extended in cases of parental leave, sickness leave or similar circumstances occurring after the PhD defense. Applicants who have yet to complete their PhDs are welcome to apply but should demonstrate that they will receive their PhD degree before 1 January 2017.

We seek candidates with a PhD in Political Science or related discipline (e.g. Psychology), and competence within the areas of political behavior broadly defined, or political psychology. We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in quantitative or experimental methods. Research skills and academic promise will be the main selection criteria, but teaching skills will also be considered. Proficiency in spoken and written English and the ability to teach in English is a requirement. The ability to conduct research independently and the ability to participate in international research collaboration are very important considerations. An important qualification for the position is the capacity to contribute to the research project’s overall goals.
