2 POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS (M/F/D)

Vacancy from  Job ID: 136/2021

Founded in 1409, Leipzig University is one of Germany’s largest universities and a leader in research and medical training. With around 30,000 students and more than 5000 members of staff across 14 faculties, it is at the heart of the vibrant and outward-looking city of Leipzig. Leipzig University offers an innovative and international working environment as well as an exciting range of career opportunities in research, teaching, knowledge and technology transfer, infrastructure and administration.

The Department of History at the Faculty of History, Art and Area Studies seeks to fill the above position, subject to the availability of funds under ERC project TRANSOPERA-101018743 “Imperial Politics of Opera in Habsburg Europe, 1815–1914”, from 1 December 2021.

The two postdoctoral positions form part of an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant led by Professor Axel Körner, investigating imperial politics of opera in Habsburg Europe, with a special focus on transnational exchanges between the territories and populations of the Habsburg monarchy, as well as the role of Austria’s multinational concept of state. The project seeks to challenge traditional narratives that have tended to highlight the role of opera as a tool of political nationalism. Instead, it examines the extent to which the Empire supported opera (both the form and the repertoire) as a means to create cultural and intellectual connections between its different lands and peoples. The project language is English. At Leipzig, the team will work closely with researchers at the departments of history, music and the research cluster ReCentGlobe.
