Fellowship types
The Collegium Helveticum fellowship programme is aimed at promising early-career researchers as well as exceptional academics and artists who are already established in their careers. We welcome applicants working in any disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, engineering and technology, medicine or the arts (fine arts, music, design, performing arts, film).
Fellowship types
The Collegium Helveticum has three fellowship types. Junior fellows are postdoc researchers, or art school graduates at an equivalent stage in their career. They spend ten months at the Collegium and receive a grant equivalent to a full salary. Senior fellows are established artists or academics who work at the Collegium during a visiting fellowship at ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich and Zurich University of the Arts. They receive a financial allowance. Associated fellows are the academic partners of the junior and senior fellows at ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich or Zurich University of the Arts.
Fellowship year and start date
The fellowship year runs from 1 September to 30 June. Junior fellows generally begin their fellowship on 1 September. Senior fellows can start at any time.
Application deadlines
The deadline for the next round of applications for junior fellowships is 30 April 2021. There is currently no application deadline for senior fellowships. Applications are assessed on a continual basis.
Junior Fellowship
Junior fellows are early-career researchers working in academic or artistic disciplines (including all subjects offered at Zurich University of the Arts) at postdoc or equivalent level. To be eligible, you will need a doctorate in an academic discipline or a master’s degree from an art school. The degree should not be older than 5 years at the time the Fellowship begins. Junior fellowships are awarded to candidates who do not have a permanent academic position, but do have a proven track record.
Duration and start date
Junior fellows spend ten months at the Collegium Helveticum, generally starting on 1 September. A different start date must be explained in the application.
Grants
Junior fellows receive a grant in the form of a full-salaried post at ETH Zurich for the duration of the fellowship. The grant is paid through monthly salary payments. The amount is based on the ETH Zurich postdoc salary rates. Information on statutory deductions can be found here.
Infrastructure
Junior fellows will be provided with a desk, access to the ETH Zurich IT infrastructure (including email address) and a computer if required. They also have access to the library’s digital subscriptions and ETH Zurich’s sport and activity programmes.
Attendance and participation
Junior fellows are required to be present at the Collegium on weekdays during term time. They will also participate in the regular jours fixes with the other fellows, where once a semester they present and discuss their ongoing work. Junior fellows are encouraged to organise their own events (e.g. workshops, lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions, performances) and will receive support from Collegium staff. Funding is possible for organising events.
Associated fellows
Before applying, applicants for a junior fellowship are asked to contact a professor at ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich or Zurich University of the Arts whose work is relevant to the proposed fellowship project and who agrees to engage as an associated fellow. The professor supports the junior fellowship application with a short letter of support detailing why and how they will support the junior fellow’s research project and how they can help them to build links with Zurich’s university and art community. Applications can also be made without an associated fellow, provided there is a valid reason.
Note for international applicants
Junior fellows are employed at ETH Zurich for the duration of their fellowship and will need a valid work and residence permit for Switzerland. Please inform yourself of all requirements as early as possible. Information is available on the ETH Zurich services and resources page.
