J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship Programme
The J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship Programme was established in 2008 in memory of Dr. Lee Jung Sen's lifelong promotion and contribution towards Chinese art. Dr. Lee was the founder of Bei Shan Tang Foundation and a distinguished philanthropist in Hong Kong who valued the importance of arts to a society and the need to nurture cultural developments. He was a major benefactor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and supported the building of its Institute of Chinese Studies and the Art Museum. He also supported numerous museums and art institutions in China and abroad, including the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Shanghai Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Oriental Ceramic Society and Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art in London.
The Programme
The J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship Programme supports curators, museum professionals and art history research academics taking part in Chinese art related Fellowships in the Programme Participating Institutions. In order to realize the goal of promoting international cultural and intellectual exchange in the field of Chinese art, the Programme requires the applicant to be based in a museum or an institution in a place outside of his / her habitual residence. Fields of Fellowship supported include Chinese art history, curatorship, archaeology, conservation, museum management and museum education.
Selected Fellows will have the opportunities to work under leading curatorial professionals, and to participate in curatorial work and research for a period of four to twelve months. The Fellowship fund will cover international round-trip airfare, accommodation and living expense during the Fellowship period. However, the Programme does not fund course study and priority will be given to applicants who have limited exchange experiences.
Programme Missions
- To promote worldwide professional exchange in the museum field and art history study for the development of traditional Chinese art; and
- To contribute to the personal professional development of curators, museum professionals and academics through research, training and collaborative projects at overseas museums and art institutions.
Programme Application
Eligibility
- The applicant must hold at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as Chinese art history, museum management, archaeology, conservation, museum education, museology and etc.
- The applicant is required to be proficient in language of the destination country.
- There are no restrictions regarding the age and nationality of the applicant.
- The applicant with more experiences will be awarded the "J. S. Lee Memorial Senior Fellow".
Award Scope
- The Programme provides funds to the Fellow to cover accommodation and living expense during the Fellowship. The expense for visa, round-trip airfare and medical insurance will be disbursed in form of reimbursement.
- To encourage Western museums in supporting deserving staff in participating in the Programme, selected Fellow's affiliated museum might be granted a salary subsidy to hire temporary staff to take over duties of the selected Fellow. This subsidy grant is subject to the needs on a case by case basis.
- The Programme does NOT fund course study, dissertation research and the collection of dissertation related materials.
Award Details
- The Fellowship duration should be ranged between four to twelve months.
- The Fellow is required to be based in a museum / an institution in the place outside of his / her habitual residence. (Applicants who are now temporarily living abroad can also apply for the Fellowship.)
- During the Fellowship, the Fellow will have the opportunities to conduct research, participate in activities of the attached museum / institution and exchange with its staff.
- The Fellow needs to begin his / her project within one year after the award has been made. Any changes in the Fellowship project date, duration or contents, differing from the application, must seek the approval of the Programme Committee through a written request. The Programme Committee reserves the final decision in whether to continue the financial support to the changed project.
- The Fellow is responsible for ensuring that he / she complies with all the necessary immigration and health requirements of the country he / she intends to go for the Fellowship. The Fellow will need to obtain the visa before any fund is disbursed.
- The Fellow must submit written reports on the work accomplished within three months after completing the work undertaken during the Fellowship tenure. The Fellow is also requested to share the research results and experiences gained during the Fellowship within two years after completing the project. Such sharing can be in form of publication, work portfolio or speech related to the project carried out during the Fellowship.
