Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in ISM Physics and Star Formation 2019, Germany

Publish Date: May 13, 2019

Deadline: May 28, 2019

Postdoctoral Researchers (f/m/d) in ISM Physics and Star Formation

We are inviting applications for postdoctoral positions to work on topics related to ISM physics, star formation and stellar feedback on small (<100pc) spatial scales in nearby galaxies within the PHANGS collaboration in Heidelberg. Positions are available in the new “Baryon Cycle in Nearby Galaxies” Emmy Noether Research Group led by Dr. Kathryn Kreckel at the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut of the Zentrum für Astronomie at Heidelberg University (ARI/ZAH), as well as in the “Extragalactic Star Formation” group led by Dr. Eva Schinnerer at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA).

Successful candidates will carry out research within the PHANGS collaboration, and will exploit new optical IFU data from VLT/MUSE, in combination with new HST and ALMA observations. Projects include answering key open questions relating to identifying and characterizing HII region and diffuse ionized gas, and characterizing the feedback physics regulating the star formation cycle as well as studying the properties of stellar populations and dynamics in the context of the star formation process.  We seek candidates with a Ph.D. degree in astronomy or a related field in combination with experience in studies of star formation. We particularly encourage application of candidates with prior experience in photoionization modeling, optical spectroscopy, HII regions, stellar population synthesis and/or dynamic modeling/analysis.

Funds will be provided for travel, guests, computing, and publications. ARI and MPIA researchers have access to all ESO facilities, including the VLT, and to the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT).  MPIA researchers also have privileged access to the 2.2m MPG telescope on La Silla, the Calar Alto 2.2m telescope and the IRAM millimeter facilities including the newly upgraded NOEMA.

Positions will be available as early as September 2019, but have a flexible starting date. The appointment will be for a period of three years. The salary will be according to the German public service scale.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, brief statement of research interests and achievements (max. 3 pages), curriculum vitae, and publication list in a single pdf file to phangs2019@mpia.de.  Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of reference separately sent to the above email address.  Applications submitted by May 28, 2019 will receive full consideration.

The positions will remain open until filled. For further information please contact Dr. Kathryn Kreckel (kreckel@mpia.de) or Dr. Eva Schinnerer (schinnerer@mpia.de).

Heidelberg University and the Max Planck Society are equal opportunity employers. Women and members of historically under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.  Heidelberg University and MPIA support its employees in their search for suitable childcare.
