Tennessee Historical Society 2019 Research Fellowship Program
The Tennessee Historical Society, Nashville, Tennessee, will begin accepting applications for the 2019 Wills Research Fellowship on October 1, 2018. The purpose of the fellowship is to promote the interpretation of Tennessee history and the scholarly use of the Society’s collections, housed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville. See the TSLA for a catalog and manuscripts guide. The fellowship is provided through the Society’s Jesse E. Wills Memorial Fund. The collections of the Society are especially strong in the frontier, Jacksonian, antebellum, and Civil War eras.
The award of the fellowship will be made on the basis of the applicant’s scholarly qualifications, the merits of the proposal, and the topic’s demonstrated use of the Tennessee Historical Society collections. Research that will likely result in an article for publication in the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, which is produced by the THS, will receive highest consideration.
A single $750 stipend for a one-week fellowship period will be awarded. University faculty, doctoral candidates, and published public and lay historians are eligible.
Applicants must submit a cover letter, a description of the research project not longer than two double-spaced typed pages, and a resume of no more than 5 pages. The project description must demonstrate the relevance to the project in using the Society’s collections and preferably will include the identification of specific materials to be used. We prefer that the application packet be emailed as a PDF to Ann Toplovich. We also require two letters of recommendation, which may be emailed or USPS mailed separately. Founded in 1849, the Tennessee Historical Society is a private, not-for-profit institution, dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of the history of all Tennesseans. Its collections include books, manuscripts, maps, images, artifacts, and more, the assemblage of which dates to 1818.
