Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War is pleased to announce a scholarship for graduate students

Shepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2018 graduate student scholarship, the “Dennis E. Frye Visiting Scholar of Civil War Studies,” to attend the 22nd annual Civil War and American Society Seminar. Graduate students enrolled in a history or public history graduate program are eligible and encouraged to apply. The scholarship is sponsored through the generosity of Mr. Dennis E. Frye, former Chief Historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and Shepherd University alumnus. Now in its second year, the 2017 scholarship was awarded to Mr. Kevin McPartland from the University of Alabama. The scholarship will cover the recipient’s full seminar tuition, meals, lodging, and domestic transportation to Gettysburg for the seminar events.

This year’s seminar, Distant Thunder: The Fighting Men, Material Culture, and Contested Memories of Gettysburg, focuses on the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. From Thursday evening, October 11, to Sunday morning, October 14, 2018, audiences will gain an intimate view of the Campaign’s Union and Confederate armies and the terrain over which they fought. We will visit Gettysburg National Military Park, the Seminary Ridge Museum, and experience a unique opportunity that will bring artifacts back to the Gettysburg Battlefield with Wayne Motts and the National Civil War Museum.

Those interested in applying should submit a one-page explanation of how participation in the seminar will advance their educational and professional goals as well as an up-to-date c.v. These documents should be sent to Jennifer Alarcon at jalarcon@shepherd.edu in either Word or PDF format. Submissions will be accepted until July 13, 2018, and the successful candidate will be announced shortly thereafter. After the seminar’s conclusion, the student scholar will offer a brief report highlighting the seminar’s content and its relationship to their graduate education due no later than November 16, 2018.

Shepherd University is located in historic Shepherdstown, West Virginia, which is approximately 70 miles west of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland.
