Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) stands for excellence in the life sciences. The Fellowship Programme provides short and long-term fellowships to life scientists in order to support international mobility and the careers of young researchers based on scientific excellence. The Administration and Finance unit is responsible for providing financial and accounting services to the EMBO programmes and activities and running the administration of EMBO.

EMBO is seeking a Finance Officer to provide accounting and bookkeeping services for the EMBO Fellowship Programme.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Accounting of stipend payments for fellowship awardees
  • Control and payment processing of travel claims
  • Reconciliation of the pension scheme for EMBO Fellows
  • Recording and follow-up of European Commission grant transactions
  • Data entry into the accounting system
  • Correspondence and filing
  • Entering of payments into the payments database
  • Supervision of creditors accounts
  • Support of finance administrator for accounting.

The Finance Officer will work closely with staff members in both the Fellowships office and the Administration and Finance unit, reporting jointly to the Head of Administration and Finance and the Head of the Fellowship Programme. The Finance Officer will assist in general activities in each team as requested by the respective supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

The Finance Officer will have a good knowledge of bookkeeping and German tax law, ideally as a trained tax assistant or accountant, and at least three years’ professional experience. Knowledge of accounting systems such as DATEV, Taylorix or Lexware is required. The Finance Officer should be familiar with debtors, creditors, prepayments and accruals, cost centers and cash flow. Candidates should be used to working independently as well as part of a team in an international environment and having contact with customers and suppliers. 
Excellent written and oral German and English language skills are a prerequisite.
