EDGE International Summer School

The 3rd and last edition of the EDGE Summer School will take place between the 4th and the 8th of September 2018 in Liège, Belgium. EDGE – Environmental Diplomacy and GEopolitics – is a joint project supported by the Horizon 2020 EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, which brings together three European partners: Sciences Po (France), the University of Economics in Bratislava (Slovakia), and the University of Liège (Belgium). After successful editions in Paris in 2016 and in Bratislava in 2017, the third and last edition of the Summer School will be hosted in Liège and will focus on Environmental Changes and Migration.

Summer School Theme

Summer School Theme is "Environmental Changes and Migration in the Global Research Agenda". According to a recent World Bank report, climate change could force over 140 million people to migrate by 2050, in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America only, if no concrete climate and development action is taken. Beyond the issue of accessibility of figures related to environmental changes and migration – both across and within borders – lies another conceptual challenge. Indeed, despite increasing empirical evidence of the environmental nature of many drivers of migration and increasing awareness of the human impacts of climate change, the place of ‘environmental migration’ within the global research agenda remains at a crossroads. What are the key challenges for academic scholarship and policy-making on this issue? What are the key research questions that should be tackled in the coming years?

This Summer School will seek to provide practical answers to this question through a highly stimulating and interactive programme, featuring many of the key experts and practitioners in the field.

Key features of the programme

  • Keynote addresses by leading experts in the field
  • Workshops with practitioners
  • Opportunities to present and get feedback on your research
  • Mentoring sessions, with career and publications advices
  • Social and cultural activities

Audience

The Summer School is open to:

  • PhD Students focusing their research on environmental changes and migration
