The Center for Global Asia at NYU Shanghai is pleased to announce the availability of two research positions for the study of intra-Asian interactions. One position is reserved for a postdoctoral fellow who already holds a PhD, preferably completed in the past five years (2011 and after). The second position may be filled by a doctoral student in the completion stage of writing the dissertation. Positions filled at the level of postdoctoral fellows are for a period of up to three years, commencing either on September 1, 2018 or December 1, 2018. The position held by a PhD candidate completing the dissertation is for up to one year, commencing either on September 1, 2018 or December 1, 2018. Candidates working on any aspect of pre-twentieth century intra-Asian interactions are welcome to apply, but one of these positions will be for a research project concentrating on Indian Ocean networks and port cities. Round trip airfare to Shanghai, and monthly compensation combining housing support and stipend will be provided by the Center for Global Asia. In addition to working on individual research and publication, the fellows are expected to assist in the activities of the Center. There is no teaching requirement.

To be considered, applicants should submit their curriculum vitae, a 3-5-page research proposal, a writing sample, and two letters of reference, all in PDF format. About the Center for Global Asia at NYU Shanghai
The Center for Global Asia at NYU Shanghai serves as the hub within the NYU Global Network University system to promote the study of Asian interactions, both historical and contemporary. The overall objective of the Center is to provide global societies with information on the contexts for the reemerging connections between the various parts of Asia through research and teaching. This includes exploring how the polities and societies of Asia have interacted over time and are now interacting again on broad fronts. The Center has recently received a Luce Foundation grant for the study of Indian Ocean port cities. The Center offers research fellows the possibility of participating in its Annual Conference and in a Young Scholars Symposium co-sponsored with other fellowship programs at NYU Shanghai.
