Publish Date: Jan 15, 2018

The Max-Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen is offering: Postdoctoral Research and Writing Fellowships

The Department of Ethics, Law and Politics in association with the Max Planck Fellow in Comparative Constitutionalism invite outstanding applications to apply for residential postdoctoral research fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity. Applicants should have substantive legal, empirical, or normative expertise in one or more of the following fields: citizenship, migration, the regulation of global mobility regimes, comparative constitutional law, or the study of cultural or religious diversity. The focus is on cutting-edge legal and theoretical puzzles. An excellent track record and promising research agenda are required. We expect the selected researchers to complete a monograph or a series of peer-reviewed articles during the fellowship term. We welcome candidates with advanced degrees in political science, law, philosophy, geography, urban studies, and international relations. The duration of the in-residence fellowship position will be up to two years. Awards are made on the basis of scholarly excellence, research promise, and fit with department’s overall research agenda. The program does not support, as a primary activity, off-site fieldwork or work in remote archives.

The Max Planck Institute offers an excellent research environment for talented postdoctoral fellows. The Institute operates in English and is located in the scenic university town of Göttingen. Fellows-in-residence are expected to devote the majority of their time to their individual research projects and publish their work in leading academic venues. In addition, they will take leadership in organizing international conferences and other academic events, contribute actively to the department’s research program, and participate fully in the intellectual life of the Institute. Their projects must relate to one or more of the core themes of the department’s research program:

  • The legal construction of borders and membership boundaries
  • Highly skilled migration and citizenship by investment
  • “Re-bordering” and the externalization of migration control (skills in empirical spatial analysis and mapping technologies are desirable for those applying under this theme)
  • Citizenship and the regulation of religious and cultural identity
  • State and religion, diversity, and multicultural accommodation
  • Comparative constitutionalism

The fellowships are open to all regardless of citizenship. The deadline for receipt of application is 31 January 2018. The envisaged starting date is between 1 March 2018 and 1 September 2018.

Applications must be submitted in English and include a cover letter describing the intersection of your work with the department’s research themes (up to 500 words), a list of publications and CV, a sample of writing in English (written or published within the past two years), a writing plan/research proposal for the project you wish to undertake during the period of the postdoctoral fellowship (up to 1000 words), and two letters of recommendation written by scholars who are familiar with your work. Applicants should also send a record of university diplomas and transcripts. Compensation is based on the German public service scale TVöD, level E 13, which is equivalent to approximately EUR 45,000 per year.

The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the participation of women wherever they are underrepresented; therefore, applications from women are particularly welcome. Following its commitment to an equal opportunities employment policy, the Max Planck Society also especially encourages persons with a disability to submit their applications.

Letters of recommendation should be submitted by your referees directly to: recke@mmg.mpg.de.
