Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies Batten, First Union, and Peter Nicolaisen International Fellowships 2018, USA

Publish Date: Oct 17, 2017

Deadline: Nov 01, 2017

Batten, First Union, and Peter Nicolaisen International Fellowships

Short-term fellowships are awarded for one or more months, and open to academics from any country, subject to selection by committee.  Successful applicants will be working on Jefferson-related projects. Priority is given to Jefferson-related projects using the Digital Archeological Archive of Comparative Slavery or Getting Word.

Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies (ICJS), where they will have access to Monticello's expert staff and research holdings at the Jefferson Library as well as those of the University of Virginia. During their residencies, fellows hold a 45 minute forum on their research projects.

The Domestic fellowship awards {Batten and First Union} carry a stipend of $2,000 per month plus pre-approved travel costs for scholars from the United States and Canada. The Peter Nicolaisen International Fellowship (reserved for citizens of other countries living outside of the U.S. and Canada) provides $3,000 per month plus pre-approved travel costs. Residential accommodation may be available on a limited basis. Because ICJS is located in a rural setting with no public transportation, it is necessary for fellows to either rent a car, bring their own car, or make arrangements with a local cab company for transportation.

Applicants should submit a succinct description of the research project (500 words), a one-paragraph summary of the project, and a résumé. Two letters of reference should be emailed directly to the Center at the address below. Please include preferred dates of residence, keeping in mind that fellowships are awarded  by calendar month (i.e. 1st - 31st).  Application deadlines are November 1 and April 1.

Please note: if you applied for a fellowship with us between June 26-July 29, 2017 we may not have received your application materials.  If you wish to inquire on the status of your application, please email ICJSFellowships@monticello.org.
