WHEATS 2017
WORKSHOP FOR THE HISTORY OF THE ENVIRONMENT, AGRICULTURE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SCIENCE
WHEATS is an intensive, cutting-edge conference for graduate students and recent PhDs who study the environment, agriculture, technology or science from a historical perspective.
The workshop provides an outstanding forum for presenting and refining works-in-progress. Eight papers are discussed over the course of the one-day conference. Papers are circulated to all participants in advance, and each is assigned a senior scholar discussant who provides feedback and solicits comments from fellow participants. The second day of the conference features a panel discussion with editors from academic journals and university presses about publishing a first article or book. Past attendees have found the conference to be extraordinarily helpful for improving their work and networking with colleagues in similar disciplines.
WHEATS began in 2004 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since then it has been hosted at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Virginia, the University of Georgia, Kansas State University, Mississippi State University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Kansas, the University of Colorado-Boulder, and Rutgers University.
The next WHEATS gathering will be held from October 13th through the 15th, at the University at Albany, SUNY, in Albany, New York. Potential participants should submit a one-page abstract (200 words) and a short curriculum vitae to wheats@albany.edu by May 1, 2017. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by June 1, 2017, and final papers will be due for pre-circulation on September 10, 2017.
