The world-renowned photographer Charlie Waite, is the inspiration and driving force behind this competition. His commitment to encourage the next generation of photographers is well known. Having led workshops in the U.S.A. for decades, Charlie has long been enthralled by the drama and diversity of its landscape. Through this high profile competition, which is open to photographers from all over the world, he hopes to give entrants a platform through which their talent and hard work can reach a wider audience and showcase the great landscapes of the U.S.A.

You will retain the copyright of all the images you submit. We believe in protecting and promoting the rights of photographers.

Prizes 

  • The overall winner of the U.S.A. Landscape Photographer of the Year will receive:
    • A cash prize of US$5,000
    • The esteemed title which they will hold for a year, until the announcement of the following year’s overall winner
    • Winning images showcased online with popphoto.com and USA TODAY
    • An annual subscription to the winner’s choice of Popular Photography or American Photo
  • The winner of Young U.S.A. Landscape Photographer of the Year will receive:
    • A cash prize of US$500
    • The esteemed title which they will hold for a year, until the announcement of the following year’s overall winner
    • Winning images showcased online with popphoto.com and USA TODAY
    • F-stop ICU (Tilopa BC) mountain series camera and lens carry system with the Medium Slope ICU

A maximum total of 23 images per entrant may be submitted in any combination of award categories. Online submission of digital photographs via the website.

Image requirements

1920 pixels along the longest length and the file size should be between 1 and 2MB. Please do not include watermarks, borders or signatures on your entry.

Eligibility

It's a new international photography competition that puts the spotlight on talented photographers from around the world and celebrates the rural and urban landscape of the U.S.A.

Entry Fee

Adult Entries:

  • Up to 2 images US$12 per image (images would only be eligible for a Category Award as a minimum of 3 images are required to be entered to be considered for the overall title award)
  • First portfolio of 3 images US$35 (eligible for U.S.A Landscape Photographer of the Year and the Category Awards)
  • Each additional portfolio US$25 (eligible for U.S.A Landscape Photographer of the Year and the Category Awards)
  • For example, if you enter 7 images your total entry fee will be US$72, made up of US$35 for your first portfolio of 3 images, plus US$25 for your second portfolio of 3 images, plus $12 for your 7th image.
  • Entry fees must be paid online through Paypal, by credit or debit card by the entrant.

Youth Entries (individuals under the age of 21 as at 15th August 2015):

  • Up to 2 images US$8 per image (images would only be eligible for a Category Award as a minimum of 3 images are required to be entered to be considered for the overall title award)
  • First portfolio of 3 images US$25 (eligible for U.S.A. Landscape Photographer of the Year and the Category Awards)
  • Each additional portfolio US$20 (eligible for U.S.A. Landscape Photographer of the Year and the Category Awards)
  • For example, if you enter 7 images, your total entry fee will be US$53, made up of US$25 for your first portfolio of 3 images, plus US$20 for your second portfolio of 3 images, plus $8 for your 7th image.
  • Entry fees must be paid online through Paypal, by credit or debit card by the entrant (or for minors, by the entrant’s parent or guardian. Paying for the entry will be seen as granting permission for the entry to be made).

How to Enter

It is simple to enter. You just need to select your favourite images and follow online entry steps. Entries close at midnight EDT on 15th August 2015. Winners will be announced at the end of May in USA TODAY and the winning images will be published in winners' galleries in Popular Photography magazine, USATODAY.com and popphoto.com.

Entering the competition is a simple process that you will be guided through when you click on the Enter Now button on the official website. A maximum total of 23 images per entrant may be submitted in any combination of award categories. Entrants may only submit an image once.

Upon registering with U.S.A. Landscape Photographer of the Year a profile page will be created for you, which will be used as the mechanism for you to keep track of the progress your image is making through the judging process. Winners will be announced in USA Today and the winning images will be published in November in winner's galleries in Popular Photography. The status panel will automatically be updated as each round of judging completes so that you can get up to the minute information on the status of your entry. This is the only means by which you will be updated of the status of your images through the competition until the completion of final judging. Final award winners will be notified by personal email. Remember, you retain all copyright over your images.
