Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Holocaust and Genocide Studies

The Hugo Valentin Centre (HVC) is an interdisciplinary unit at the Department of History, Uppsala University, with a focus on research and education in two particular fields: first, cultural, social and political phenomena and processes of change related to the ethnic dimension of human life and, second, Holocaust and genocide studies. The latter field includes Holocaust history and historiography, comparative analyses of genocide and other grave violations of human rights, as well as research on the effect of mass violence on individuals and society. Research is conducted in a markedly cross-disciplinary environment that brings together researchers with a background in humanities and social sciences.
Duties:
A postdoctoral fellow’s duties consist mainly of research, to apply for external research funding in the field, but also some administration. The position requires continuous attendance at the Centre, active participation in seminars, on-going presentation of the fellow’s own research and, where necessary, teaching and supervision of students corresponding to up to 20% of the position.
Eligibility requirements:
To be eligible for the postdoctoral fellowship the applicant must have a PhD or attained corresponding academic subject proficiency in the humanities or social sciences and have the personal characteristics required to meet the demands of the position well. A person with a PhD obtained not more than three years before the end of the application period is particularly eligible for the position.
Assessment criteria:
Particular weight is given to the applicant’s prospects of contributing to research in the field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, but teaching skills and administrative proficiency will also be considered. A five-page description of the research that the applicant intends to carry out at HVC must be enclosed with the application. It should contain a theoretically grounded account of how the project contributes to the international state of the art in the subject; a clear time schedule for project implementation; and a list of the applicant’s five most important publications of relevance for the project. How the planned project is connected with current research at the Centre and/or contributes to the renewal of its activities, and how the applicant intends to present the results, should also be clearly stated. Documented ability in terms of inter-disciplinary research perspectives and cooperation is a merit, as are applications in the subject fields of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University.
Academic proficiency will be assessed primarily in terms of quality of scholarship. Other significant criteria are the applicant’s ability to independently plan, initiate, lead and develop research; capacity to obtain funds for research in competition; and demonstrated skill of interacting both with colleagues in the discipline and with the community at large.
Other skills:
Administrative proficiency is important for the position and will be given weight. This skill is demonstrated by, for example, an ability to plan, organise and prioritise work in a way that is efficient and fit for purpose. It is also shown by a capacity to define and adhere to time frames. Proficiency includes overall work planning, an ability to initiate and run networks and to organise conferences and seminars, and skill in managing resources in a manner that benefits activities. Applicants are required to be highly proficient in English, with skill in expressing themselves in speech and writing.
Application procedure: A complete application, including publications cited, must include:
- A curriculum vitae and attested copies of certificates and other documents referred to.
- A brief account of academic, teaching and other work. Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) that can, in assessment of qualifications, be credited to the applicant should be included in the account of qualifications and experience.
- A list of the five academic works cited in the application. These should be ranked according to their relevance to the application. It must also be clearly stated which writings belong to the following categories: monographs, peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Publications cited must be enclosed with the application.
- A five-page project description closely connected with the state of the art in the research field.
