University of Würzburg PhD position in Bioimage Analysis

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a masters degree in biology, physics, computer science or a related discipline, with a solid background in image processing and quantitative data analysis. Knowledge of at least one programming language and basic statistics is required. Ideally, you already have experience with one or several of the following topics: machine learning/AI, HPC, research data management, software engineering, and algorithm development. If your background is not biology, you should have demonstrated interest to apply your computational skills to biological questions (e.g. in your undergraduate research).

The Center of Computational and Theoretical Biology is a newly founded unit within the Faculty of Biology at the University of Würzburg and provides excellent working conditions in a highly vibrant interdisciplinary environment. In our group, we develop and apply computational tools to analyze, quantify, and understand biological image data (“Bioimage Bioinformatics”), in close collaboration with experimental groups within the faculty. We have access to highend computational resources within the center and on campus, and the possibility to use cell culture and imaging facilities of the Biocenter Würzburg.

The details of the research project can be adjusted to the interests of the candidate. Possible examples are quantification of correlated dynamics (e.g. tissue development, swarming  animals), or morphometry of networklike structures (e.g. neuronal networks, plant growth).Besides carrying out your own research project, you will be involved in developing the research infrastructure of the lab (image data repository, remote 3D visualization), and get the opportunity to supervise undergraduate students.

The position is available starting from July 1, 2016, for a period of 3 years. Please send your applications as a single PDF file, including a coverletter describing your research interest, a full CV and the contact information of at least one referee to Prof. Philip Kollmannsberger  (philip.kollmannsberger@uniwuerzburg.de).

The University of Würzburg is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. Applications of disabled persons with equal qualifications will  be treated preferentially. Closing date for applications is June 30, 2016.
