DESCRIPTION

The Penn State Humanities Institute seeks applications for up to four newly available Post-doctoral Fellowships for the 2019-2020 Academic Year. Fellowships are for up to two years. Fellows will be in residence at the Humanities Institute at Penn State and will be afforded office space and support for ongoing research projects. No teaching is required for these Fellowships, however teaching opportunities may be available if the scholar wishes. The Penn State Humanities Institute is dedicated to supporting research and teaching in the humanities that is shaped by a collaborative spirit and is alert to how humanities scholarship is crucial for broader conversations about pressing social issues. Several initiatives housed in the Institute are grounded in this mission. Driven by these values, the Institute is pleased to announce a new initiative, Humanities in the World, which aims to broaden Penn State’s committed focus on the social importance of humanities work.

Post-doctoral Fellowships are available as a central part of this initiative. Applicants can come from any area in traditional humanities fields (as defined, for example, by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Applicants are encouraged to explain how their work bears on issues of social concern, even if indirectly. The successful applicants will be distinguished by their scholarly excellence and how their work fits in with the central values of the Institute’s mission.

The Humanities Institute welcomes applications from scholars who have received their PhD’s within the past three years (after May 1, 2016). Terminal degrees must be in hand by July 1, 2019. Applications should include; a CV; contact information for two references, and a letter describing how you might be suited for the position and detailing your area(s) of expertise and training. It is expected that the fellow will be in residence at the Humanities Institute for the full academic year and take part in the intellectual life of the campus by working with faculty and students, attending symposia and events, and contributing to meetings and discussions presented by Humanities Institute.

The Fellowship stipend is $48,900 plus benefits and a $4,000 research fund. Scholars will be expected to be in residence at Penn State’s University Park campus and to participate in the Institute’s colloquia and other events, as their interests dictate.
