Overview
‘The Factory of Dreams’ is an introduction to the theory, history and criticism of film. Some of the analytical models we will employ, such as semiotics or psychoanalysis, will explore the complex language of the medium (how film communicates); others, such as genre and auteur criticism, will examine the ideological relationship between cinema and society (what film communicates). For the purposes of discussion, the core film text will be Apocalypse Now (dir. Francis Ford Coppola, 1979). No prior knowledge of film studies is assumed, although you must be enthusiastic about discussing great works of cineema.

Tutor
Keith Hopper is the author of Flann O’Brien: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Post-modernist (revised edition 2009), and general editor of the twelve-volume Ireland into Film series (2001-07). He is a regular contributor to the Times Literary Supplement.
Course aims
This course aims to provide is an introduction to film studies, focusing on the question of how to ‘read’ a film.
Teaching methods
All summer school courses are taught through group seminars and individual tutorials. Students also conduct private study when not in class and there is a well stocked library at OUDCE to support individual research needs.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will be expected to understand:
- how to analyse a film in terms of its ‘language’ (mise-en-scène/composition, montage/editing, sound, etc.)
- the evolution of modern cinema
- how to express this knowledge from a variety of critical perspectives
And students will be expected to have gained and/or developed the following skills:
- how to systematically analyse a film text
- how to think about film in the context of other art forms how to write a critical review.
Assessment methods
Students are assessed during the summer school by either a 1500 word written assignment or a presentation supported by individual documentation. To successfully gain credit (10 CATS points) students should attend all classes and complete the on-course assignment. There is also a pre-course assignment of 1000 words set. Although this does not count towards credit, it is seen as an important way of developing a student's ideas and therefore its completion is mandatory.

English Language Requirements
If English is not your first language you must supply suitable evidence (an original certificate that is not more than two years old and issued by a responsible body) that you have reached the Standard overall score, plus the additional requirement before you may be offered a place.
