University of Oslo Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Neuroscience

Position as postdoctoral research fellow available at the Department of Biosciences and in the research group of Associate Professor Marianne Fyhn at Center for Integrated Neuroplasticity (CINPLA).

The fellowship period is three years. Within the framework of the position duties may be assigned. Starting date no later than 01.10.2016. No one can be appointed for more than one specified period at the same institution.

Job/ project description

The brain reveals a remarkable ability to adapt to changing conditions and learn from experience, and a better understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying these processes is essential to understand and promote healthy development, learning, and recovery from disease. In our laboratory we study neural processing and plasticity at multiple levels from the morphological changes of dendritic spines to functional changes of network activity in behaving animals.

The aim of the present project is to identify cell-specific and molecular contributions to learning and memory processing. The effects of targeted genetic perturbations on neural circuit function will be directly assessed using in vivo two-photon laser scanning microscopy (2PLSM) in combination with genetically encoded fluorophores. The candidate will establish new behavioral paradigms in combination in vivo 2PSLM, and closely collaborate with investigators in computational neuroscience to develop computational models of the underlying neural circuitry.

Qualifications

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The candidate must have a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in (Physiology/Neuroscience).  The preferred candidate has strong experience from in vivo investigations of brain function in animal models.

The research fellow should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations. We offer broad training possibilities in the required experimental methods within a stimulating academic environment.

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.
