University of Oslo PhD Research Fellowship in Soft Matter
Position as PhD Research fellow is available at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oslo (Norway) and Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany) for three years.
Starting date as soon as possible. No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.
Project description
We offer a joint PhD position in Soft Matter/Physical Chemistry at the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS-1) & Institute for Complex Systems (ICS-1) at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (Dr. Lutz Willner) and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oslo (Dr. Reidar Lund). The project concerns studies on kinetic processes in self-assembled polymeric and peptide systems. The main experimental technique is time-resolved small angle neutron scattering (TR-SANS) including data modelling. Complementary techniques are small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), light scattering, DSC and densitometry. The polymers are model systems, prepared and characterized in the polymer chemistry lab of JCNS in Jülich. If desired, the PhD candidate may also be involved in the synthesis, but the main task will be related to physical chemistry.
The selected candidate will be spending the first 18 months in Germany subject to the payment and conditions offered at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH. Subsequently she/he will continue the PhD-project in Oslo employed at the University of Oslo. The candidate will be enrolled in the PhD-program at the Department of Chemistry for the whole duration of the project. SANS experiments will mainly be carried out at the MLZ institute in Garching and the national neutron source in Norway (IFE) and in addition at other international sources. SAXS, nano-DSC and densitometry are performed in Oslo.
Requirements/qualifications
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
Applicants must hold a MSc degree in chemistry or physics, preferably within the fields of physical chemistry, polymer science, soft matter science or similar. Preference will be given for a candidate with previous experience in X-ray/neutron scattering techniques and theoretical data modelling.
Candidates without a Master's degree have until September 30. 2016 to complete the final exam.
The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The fellowship requires admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD program must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position. For more information see:

Conditions and salary
Please note that the contract will consist of two separate employments of 18 months each, one for Jülich another for Oslo. The first 18 months is subjected to German regulations and pay roll "TVÖD EG13/1 75%" which equals gross salary of approximately in the range of EUR 33 700-37 400 depending on qualifications. Position code 1017, Pay grade: 50 - 57 (NOK 430 500 – 483 700 per year depending on qualifications)
