University of Oslo PhD Research Fellowship in Marine Geology/Ecology

Position as PhD Research fellow available at Department of Geosciences.

If the successful candidate has a good knowledge of one Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish), the fellowship will be for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at the Department). Otherwise, the fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work. Starting date no later than 01.10.2016.

No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.

Project description

Fjords have been ranked as one of the ocean's major `hotspots' for organic carbon burial. Still, our knowledge concerning how much (and what kind of) organic carbon is being accumulated in Norwegian fjord sediments, and to what extent organic material from aquaculture operations may be responsible for present-day oxygen depletion, is very limited. The topics are closely related and of particular societal importance. The aims of the project are to 1) characterise and quantify temporal (past few hundred years) organic carbon accumulation rates and associated benthic foraminifera in fjord sediments along the Norwegian coastline and 2) test recently developed methodologies for defining ecological reference conditions in northern Norwegian fjord settings. The candidate will attend cruises, collect sediment cores for stratigraphical/ paleoecological as well as present-day ecological analyses and perform experiments to test carbon uptake by benthic foraminifera. The project is closely associated with the NFR funded project JellyFarm and work performed by the international FOBIMO-group. The candidate will be part of these active research groups.

Requirements/qualifications

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in a natural science discipline relevant to the project work. Documented experience with some or all of the following subjects is an advantage: Benthic foraminifera, (paleo)ecology, geochemistry, stable isotopes, geochronology, and statistical analysis.

A good command of English is required of all students attending the University of Oslo. Experience with scientific publication in English is an asset.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June, 2016 to complete the final exam.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position.

A good command of English is required.
