PhD Research Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering

A  position as PhD Research fellow in biomedical engineering is available at The Department of Physics, University of Oslo. The position is funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (MSCA-ITN) project "Training4CRM" within the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union.

No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.


Training4CRM is a four-year project, funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016) under the MSCA-ITN Grant Agreement No. 722779. The project is highly cross disciplinary and focuses on bridging the existing gaps within Cell-based Regenerative Medicine (CRM) for treatment of neurodegenerative disorders (e.g. Parkinson´s (PD), Huntington´s (HD)   Epilepsy (EPI)) by joint training and education of 15 PhD students within and across different scientific disciplines. The goal is to master the design, fabrication, integration and testing of completely new tools and materials within the fields of micro and nanoengineering, biotechnology, and pre-clinical research. The Training4CRM network comprises 6 academic institutes and 3 industry partners from 6 European countries (Denmark, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Italy, and the Netherlands).

The Research Fellow will be working on the development of electrode systems for bioimpedance based monitoring of cells. The work will also comprise development of methods for non-linear electrical monitoring and analysis of measured data for observing vital cell parameters. The position also involves required external research stays (secondments) at the project pre-defined partners of Training4CRM; a maximum of 10 months.

Eligibility criteria

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in biomedical engineering, biochemistry, or similar within the Natural Sciences and must have some experience with characterization methods for cells or biomaterials.

The applicant should also preferably have the following qualifications:

  • Experience with cell culturing, especially (as an advantage) - cultivation of human induced pluripotent stem cells and differentiation to neuronal cells 
  • Experience with electrical characterization of cells or other biomaterials (impedance spectroscopy and action potential recording) 
  • Experience with the design of microelectrode systems for bioimpedance measurements 
  • Molecular biological analysis methods, such as immunocytochemistry, qPCR, Western Blot

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

MSCA Early Stage Researcher requirement:

The Research Fellow must at the time of recruitment by the host, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was   envisaged.

MSCA mobility requirement:

The Research Fellow is required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. At the time of selection by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.


Position code 1017, Salary: NOK   432 700 – 489 300 per year (pay grade 50 – 57), depending on qualifications and seniority.

The researcher fellow will be employed and receive according payment as an ordinary salary from UiO based on the general conditions stated in the Employment Agreement. The salary includes all monthly amounts provided by the Research Executive Agency as specified in the Grant Agreement, comprising of Living Allowance, Mobility Allowance, and if applicable, Family Allowance.
