Job description

A Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) in Linguistic Explorations beyond Language is available at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies (ILN), University of Oslo.

The position is associated with the Super Linguistics Research Group and is funded by the faculty of Humanities.

The candidate is expected to present a research project with clear relevance for the emerging field of ‘Super Linguistics’, defined as the application of formal linguistic methodology (and methodology inspired by formal linguistics, especially from the perspective of syntax, semantics and the syntax-semantics interface) to diverse non-standard objects (such as gestures, music, dance, non-verbal pictorial representations, animal calls, etc.). Of specific interest are interdisciplinary proposals that combine formal linguistic approaches with approaches from areas such as (but not limited to) musicology, psychology, ethology, cognitive science, human movement science, robotics, or informatics. We seek strongly motivated, competent and internationally oriented candidates, with high-ranking qualifications in their relevant area of research.

The position is available for a period of 2 years.

The successful candidate is expected to become part of the research environment/network of the department and contribute to its development. The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

  • PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in linguistics, philosophy, musicology, psychology, biology (ethology), cognitive science, human movement science, robotics, informatics, or other relevant field. The applicant is required to document that the degree corresponds to the profile for the post.
  • The candidate's research project must be closely connected to the Super Linguistics Research Group, including experience with research in formal linguistics (syntax, semantics, the syntax-semantics interface, and/or related fields)
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position

The doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis (or equivalent)  being approved.

In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be placed on:

  • The project’s scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
  • The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out the project within the allotted time frame and contribute to the Super Linguistics Research Group
  • The quality of the project description
  • The applicant’s research suitability for the Super Linguistics Research Group, as documented by relevant manuscripts and/or publications
  • Documented experience with methodology (e.g., experimental and/or statistical) that is relevant for the proposed research project
  • Documented skills with software/analysis tools that are relevant for the proposed research project, including programming skills in Matlab, Python and/or similar environments
  • Good co-operative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic collaboration within and across disciplines.
  • Interest in areas such as animal communication (especially primate linguistics), body movement (especially gestures or dance), multimodality, music and/or audio-visual media is considered an advantage.

We offer

  • Salary NOK 515 200 – 597 400 per annum depending on qualifications
  • A professionally stimulating working environment
  • Membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
