Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research Fellowships within "Environmental Humanities"

Description

Three Doctoral or Postdoctoral Research Fellowships within the field of Environmental Humanities, connected to three ongoing research projects, are available at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS), University of Oslo. Environmental Humanities is a rapidly expanding research field where scholars approach the study of man-made geological and atmospheric changes from the perspective of the humanities. IKOS now seeks to recruit three Doctoral or Postdoctoral candidates with excellent research qualifications who will investigate issues related to climate change and other environmental challenges that confront the planet and its inhabitants from the perspective of one or several humanistic academic disciplines, for instance, but not limited to, literary science, culture studies, history, anthropology, media science, linguistics, religious studies, Middle East studies, China studies, or other area studies.

The successful candidates will join an active and internationally engaged group of scholars working in the field of Environmental Humanities from different academic disciplines and research perspectives. In addition, each candidate will be affiliated with one of the three research groups listed below that are currently working in the field of Environmental Humanities at IKOS. Applicants should formulate an individual Doctoral or Postdoctoral project that is related to at least one of these:

a)   Airborne: Pollution, Climate Change and Visions of Sustainability in China welcomes applicants who study issues related to climate change, air pollution, or other environmental issues in the context of China or Taiwan and from the perspective of one of the humanistic sciences mentioned above. Working proficiency in  Chinese (Mandarin) is required.

b) Geological Times: Geology and New Regimes of Historicity invites projects that study the reintegration of human and natural history in the cultural – both conceptual and material – framework of “the Anthropocene” and in response to continuities and breaks in the history of knowledge since the 18th century. Applicants must have an MA in a discipline relevant to the field of research.

c) GreenMENA: Climate Change and Energy Transition in the Middle East welcomes applicants who study renewable energy issues in the Middle East and North Africa region. Preference will be given to projects which explore the human factor in energy transition processes, including the social, cultural and political preconditions for a green energy shift, and its impact on regime stability and state-society relations. Applicants must have working proficiency in Arabic or in another of the region’s main languages.

The appointments are for the duration of three years, starting in August 2017. The successful candidates must engage in the designated research activities on a full-time basis.

Doctoral candidates must participate in the research training program organized by the Faculty of Humanities. The purpose of the Doctoral Research Fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral degree that will be defended at the Faculty. The successful candidate will be automatically accepted for the research-training program (PhD program) at the Faculty of Humanities, UiO. Read more about the doctoral degree. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant.

For the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship there is a 10% duty component devoted to teaching or other qualifying work for the department. The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher positions within their disciplines.
