University of Oslo Department of Special Needs Education Postdoctoral Fellowship

A two-year position as a postdoctoral fellow is vacant in the Department of Special Needs Education within the subject area of “Language learning in primary school children”.

The Department of Special Needs Education at the University of Oslo is one of the three departments at the Faculty of Education. The department focuses on basic and applied research and education at the bachelor-, master- and doctoral levels within the field of special needs education.

The postdoctoral fellowship is a recruitment position within the project The vocabulary learning challenge which is funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The aim of the project is to develop a vocabulary intervention targeting typically developing children, children at-risk for language and reading impairment and children with hearing impairment. The project will include development of a vocabulary training app and a classroom vocabulary program. The post doctoral fellow is expected to contribute to the development of assessment and intervention materials as well as the data collection and scoring of tests used in the intervention study. The Department of Special Needs Education is in the process of establishing an “Assessment and Learning Lab” investigating cognitive-, linguistic and social abilities of children, adolescents and adults. It might be possible for the successful applicant to be a scientific partner in the work going on in the lab.

The project was initiated by the research group Child Language and Learning at the Department of Special Needs Education and involves collaboration with a number of international researchers within the fields of language impairment and assessment.

Qualification requirements

The appointment requires a PhD or a degree equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in special needs education, education or in another relevant discipline such as psychology and linguistics. A prerequisite for applicants who have not yet defended their thesis is that the PhD work is submitted for assessment before the closing date for applications. Appointment to the post doctoral position is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved. Since the assessment of language abilities in Norwegian-speaking children will be part of the research fellow’s contribution, mastery of Norwegian language is required.

In the assessment of the applications, emphasis will be put on:

  • The quality of the project proposal
  • The applicants’ academic and personal qualifications for conducting the project
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the post
  • Good ability to collaborate and to form part of a cross-disciplinary academic community
