Postdoc: It takes two to communicate: Voice perception and linguistic content

Job description

Do you want to do exciting research in a multidisciplinary project?
We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious postdoctoral scientist with a background in engineering, audiology, neuroscience, or similar, to join the NWO VICI project of Prof. Deniz Baskent. The position is at the ENT Department, Audiology group, of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands.

This project will investigate the role voice perception plays in speech communication, in normal and impaired hearing.
A talker’s voice can convey information about the talker, such as their identity (sex, age, place of origin) and emotional state (are they angry? happy?). It can also directly contribute to speech comprehension in noise, by allowing listeners to track and separate a talker’s voice from interfering talkers (cocktail-party listening). Although voice perception and speech comprehension appear to be linked, the nature of this link and its consequences for hearing-impaired individuals, with or without hearing devices, are not fully understood. To tackle this problem, we work with special tools (e.g., STRAIGHT), special populations (e.g., children, hearing-impaired), and multidisciplinary expertise (e.g. engineering, audiology).

What do we need

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to advance the said project, but also produce own ideas, co-supervise students, contribute to teaching, and maintain and adhere to lab protocols, such as ethical guidelines, data management plan, and similar.
Further, the ideal candidate will have:

  • A PhD in engineering, physics, audiology, psychology, neuroscience or a related field.
  • Programming experience with Matlab and/or Python.
  • Knowledge on data analyses and statistical methods.
  • A strong academic record.
  • Good communication skills, good written and verbal English skills, and publication experience.

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.

In case of specific professions a ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ is required.

What do we offer

The lab is equipped with auditory testing rooms, eye tracking and EEG. We offer an exciting work environment, where we work closely with medical staff, patients, manufacturers of hearing devices, and local and international collaborators.
UMCG is one of the largest academic hospitals in the Netherlands. More than 10,000 employees provide patient care, medical education, and scientific work focused around the theme of ‘Healthy and Active Ageing’.

The advertised position is for one year, renewable yearly upon a successful review, up to a maximum duration of three years. Starting date is 1st September 2019, with some flexibility.

Gross salary is in scale 10 (€ 2.882,- and € 4.361,- per month, depending on experience). In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The terms of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centers (CAO-UMC).
