PhD fellowship in Pharmacovigilance
The Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology is offering a three-year PhD fellowship in Pharmacovigilance. The PhD fellowship is financed by the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology and the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
The fellowship is available from 1 December 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Project description
The continuous surveillance of adverse drug reactions after marketing is mainly based on spontaneous reporting systems. These systems are useful for signal detection and identification of safety concerns but they also have well-known limitations, and additional pharmacoepidemiological studies using healthcare register data are needed to quantify and evaluate drug-associated risks. This is in particular true in relation to long-term effects of drugs, which the spontaneous reporting system is not geared to capture. The study of long-term drug exposure and adverse effects is generally challenging and entails both methodological and drug specific challenges.
The aim of the PhD project is to investigate long-term adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs using Danish healthcare register data. Different analytical approaches will be explored, and epidemiological and statistical challenges as well as limitations of data and methods will be addressed.
The PhD fellow will through the project gain insight into drug development, medicines safety and post-marketing surveillance and provide an opportunity to specialize in these areas. The research is expected to involve contact and potential collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry, international research networks and regulatory authorities. Required qualifications
As an applicant you must have:
- Obtained a Master degree in pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, public health, statistics or a related area prior to the starting date.
- Fluency in English and excellent communication skills.
Preferred qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a background in pharmaceutical sciences or another subject area related to this project. Previous practical experience with quantitative research within pharmaceutical sciences, drug utilisation, pharmacovigilance or pharmacoepidemiology will be considered strong assets for the candidate. Broad knowledge of medicines, pharmacotherapy and adverse effects, and knowledge of healthcare register data will be considered an advantage. The preferred candidate should also have experience with statistical analysis software such as SAS or Stata. The candidate should be enthusiastic about working in a collaborative research environment and be genuinely interested in pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology. A supervisor team will be connected to the PhD project, but the candidate is expected to be able to work independently on the project and contribute with ideas to the project and to the research plan.
Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at the Faculty are to:
- Conduct an independent research project under supervision.
- Write scientific articles and the PhD thesis on the grounds of your research project.
- Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points.
- Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project.
- Participate in the undergraduate teaching of students in pharmaceutical sciences.
- Participate in national and international congresses and scientific meetings.
- Stay at an external research institution, preferably abroad.
Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
- Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD programme.
- Relevant work experience.
- Previous publications.
- Experience with conducting independent quantative research using statistical software.
- The grade point average achieved.
- Other professional activities.
- Language skills.
- The successful applicant is also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.
Formal requirements
The position is available for a 3-year period for applicants holding a relevant master’s degree.
The successful applicant will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences according to the rules stipulated in the Ministerial order on the PhD programme at the universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education and the guidelines for the PhD programme at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.
The PhD student is expected to be affiliated to the graduate programme in pharmaceutical sciences, Drug Research Academy.
Terms of employment
The position as a PhD fellow is available for a 3-year period.
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organizations. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around DKK 26,754 (approx. 3,588 EUR) (taxable) plus pension. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).
