The Jerome Robbins Dance Division Research Fellowship 2017, SUA

Publish Date: Mar 15, 2017

Deadline: Apr 15, 2017

About the fellowship

The Jerome Robbins Dance Division is pleased to offer Research Fellowships to support scholars and practitioners engaged in graduate-level, post-doctoral, and independent research. This initiative is made possible through the generosity of the Dance Committee of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division.

In honor of the centenary of Jerome Robbins in 2018, the focus of this fellowship cycle will be the Jerome Robbins papers (S) *MGZMD 130 and the Jerome Robbins personal papers (S) *MGZMD 182, as well as the many resources related to Robbins within the Library. We are particularly interested in proposals that will uncover new aspects of Jerome Robbins’ legacy including, but not limited to, his photography, artwork and writing, as well as his overall contribution to dance.

Fellowship stipends are $7,500 and the research period is June 1 - December 31, 2017.

Questions about the Dance Research Fellowships should be directed to the curatorial staff.

Eligibility

Only U.S. citizens, permanent residents and foreign nationals who have been resident in the United States for the three years as of January 31, 2017 may apply.

Applicants should identify specific material(s) to be consulted during the desired dates of the fellowship period. Successful applications will also include an in-depth explanation of how collections existing only at the New York Public Library are essential to the progress and completion of the research project and will highlight the impact of their research on the legacy of Robbins.  The proposal and CV should be no longer than 5-pages in length.  Proposals and letters of recommendation should be submitted under separate cover to dance@nypl.org no later than April 15, 2017.

Fellowship Announcement: The awarding of the fellowships will be announced on May 1, 2017. Fellowship recipients and their research projects will be acknowledged on The New York Public Library website and in Library publicity.

Residency: Fellows must take up residency between June 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017.  Fellows are not expected to be in continuous residence for the duration of the fellowship award period but must provide evidence of progress during mandatory check in points throughout the residency.

Fellowship Symposium: Each fellow will be required to participate in a symposium in January 2018 where they will deliver a presentation on the outcome of their research. Applications for practice as research are welcomed so the final presentation may take the form of a performance in lieu of a paper.
